What's happened to golden boy promotions putting on their own shows in the UK? They given up on the idea?
Schaefer tells people what they want to hear.He is a promoter and greedy. No TV to back up his fights then no fight.God forbid he put up his own money.
Schaefer talks the biggest pile of shite you're ever likely to hear. Just says whatever to please whoever is interviewing him at the time
he knows without sky its not a commercially viable option. until golden boy have a number of good fighters from here sky will not be interested. eddie has all the dates from sky, he has implied that he is willing to sell dates to other promoters as long as they put on a good show. this could be golden boys way into the market. eddie doesn't seem to have a problem with golden boy like he does with other u.k promoters, they got an agreement for brook vs alexander without the need for purse bids which suggests they are ok with each other. also ogogo is fighting on matchroom bills while he is still signed with golden boy. nothing will happen until golden boy sign 2 or 3 top fighters from the u.k. if they get groves, degale and Frampton then it could move things along.
It was just for Khan fights, if they build Ogogo up then they may do a few more fights over here. The money over here is a pocket change compared to the states anyway
I'm pretty sure I have seen Arum say he loses money on a lot of shows. Can't find the quote. But from Schaefer: "You never know. Is it going to be a home run? Or is it going to be a flop? I don't know if 1.5 million or two million or three million people are going to buy the event," Schaefer said. "I hate to lose money, but that goes with the territory. If you don't take any risks, you aren't going to gain anything either. And by the way, that does happen sometimes." "It can happen," Espinoza concedes, admitting it is indeed possible to lose money, even on a mega-event. http://bleacherreport.com/articles/...olden-boy-can-afford-to-pay-floyd-415-million
Losing money on shows in this country is quickly becoming the norm. Without Sky money, promoting fights in the UK often isn't profitable. Have a look at Danny Flexen's recent piece on promoters in Boxing News. I think Dave Coldwell said he lost on 12 of 13 shows last year and Carl Greaves lost on over half of his. I also remember an interview Steve Wood did with Boxing Monthly a couple of years ago, where he said something along the lines of "I've promoted 150 shows and only made money on about 25".
Only reason Matchroom Boxing kept afloat wasn't because of Eddie Hearn's genius, but more because Matchroom had Darts and Snooker and all sorts to subsidise the boxing when all promoters were losing money. Fair play to Barry Hearn for building that multi-sports business though
Golden boy UK is a no go especially if the people that run it continue to do so. Look how long they have supposedly been operating in the UK market. The have Ogogo so far and thats pretty much it. There is no real incentive for a good young UK prospect to join this stable. They have no clout in the UK and the dude running the UK division is nobody in the boxing industry.
