Wasn't stuff like dianabol legal in the States up till the 1990s?

There are various rumours of what Bruce Lee used to take. This include diuretics and steroid usage

I dunno, for muscle building steroids have been ripe since the 60s and extreme in the 80s. PEDS have been used in athletics in the 80s as well so maybes the 90s is about right for performance enhancers in boxing.

The main advantage of PED's for boxers isn't really in a fight situation IMO , but in allowing them to prepare better and therefore be in better shape than a natural athlete come fight night.

For example, a genetically gifted athlete in their prime with flawless nutrition and training can gain a MAXIMUM of 0.5lbs a week of muscle, and that would be with a massive calorie surplus that would also lead to a gain in bodyfat. In reality, a top athlete can probably gain 1lb a month of muscle, but at the same time gain 3-4lbs of bodyfat. Now, to look the way Floyd or dsy extreme Timothy Bradley looks you are looking at around 5-7% bodyfat.

How does Timothy Bradley gain 5lbs of muscle, without gaining a ton of bodyfat? Most people will say "well, he probably just burns off the fat". But it's impossible to burn fat without also breaking down some muscle tissue, so the idea of him gaining 5lbs of muscle means he probably had to gain 7-10lbs before cutting. Suddenly the reality of him probably gaining an absolute minimum of 2lbs of fat for every 1lb of muscle (which would be a VERY impressive ratio) means at some point he would have to be about 30lbs up in weight before cutting. Cutting at a rate of more than a 1-2lbs a week leads to higher muscle atrophy, so this man who needs to lose about 25lbs needs at least 12-15 weeks just to cut that additional weight. All the while he's supposed to be training to box, so can't do weightloss specific training and nutrition. It's a hugely demanding ask of even the most elite athlete, and when you throw in niggles/injuries/promotional responsibilities/stress etc

But bring in testosterone/hgh/epo/steroids etc and all those time periods and genetic barriers can be breached. You can gain muscle quicker, and at a cleaner ratio. The figures I've quoted are figures gained from bodybuilding/strength athletes, who have a much easier time of gaining weight than boxers who generally limit hypertrophy (i.e. low max reps/heavy free weights) due to the fact its not particularly useful in a boxing context.

I'm not saying it's impossible for these top guys to have moved up without PED's. Just that PED's would make something extremely difficult, more manageable. And of course there are guys who just move up in weight because they are naturally bigger, and can't/won't cut the same weight anymore, so they just fight with a little more bodyfat or less intense draining period. It's the guys who are 20lbs bigger, yet look in better shape that raise my eyebrows.

To be fair I think alot of the guys moving up put on a bit of weight and just cut less

True. Micky Ward once said that the only reason fighters move up is because they get lazy and don't want to cut anymore.

But like others have said, Floyd at 147-150 looks flawless. No signs of extra flab or insulation. And when you think at 130 he looked flawless too. Either it really is hard work and dedication or a little help from the Doctor. Either is possible.

You only have to listen to some of the testimonies from athletes involved in BALCO to understand the effect drugs like steroids can have. Kelli White gave an inyterview where she said they essentially turned her into a super athelete who could train for stupid lengths of time at a ridiculous intensity and never tire.

Think the interview is on this video:

    [ame]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_doping_cases_in_sport[/ame]

shows all the doping cases in sport, don't think its a complete list but still look at the ratio of boxing to other sports and it is pretty pathetic especially when you take the likes of Hatton and Calzaghe off for cocaine use after they retired.

yep, and that is why it is pathetic, in fact as much as I love the sport it is pretty pathetic in many many ways. Just a shambles of a sport at times.
