its interesting looking back now at that fight,

andrew golota began the take over of heavyweight boxing in a way because
before european heavyweights were not taken all that seriously by the american promotors,

even guys like diamani were an after though and fighters from more threatening countries like poland and russia were not even signed by usa promotors .
an example being Aleksandr Miroshnichenko a great amauter star whom
american promotors didnt even to look at

sure there was interest in these guys in europe and in asia especially japan
but in america no one cared and the fight they did so great in amauter
was dismissed as them having an amatuer style or being pros that fight forever in amatuers etc

while at home making like the great white hype etc(dont see to many movies like that now)

then comes bowe vs golota aka some polish guy,
i remember training as a kid when the fight happened and all these at the gym seemed to laugh that bowe was gonna introduce him to the pro game lol

and the fight happens and guess what
    a. golota seems skilled
    b. golota is the " street thug" in the ring going against the whole image of the
american ghetto fighter who scares anyone who is not like him

c.even larry marchant made a comment how this could be the start of a huge change which it was

now times ofcourse are different americans will tell you how boxing talents in the usa now go to football etc

and talk about the glory of days of
larry holmes etc and pretending guys like igor vitosky were not even around.

i guess some things dont change

Alright, alright but Golota was still a psycho in both fights. Flagrant south of the border punches. Golota is a strange individual...

Americans thought Bowe would steamroll Golota because they were ignorant to the wealth of talent coming up in Europe at that time.
After Golota schooled and bullied Bowe in consecutive fights, Bowe suddenly became "shot".
Now that Europe dominates the HW's, all big Americans decide to focus on other sports.

I sort of see your point, except Bowe was never really that good, anyway.

theres truth in that. i love larry holmes but he fought in a dreadfull era which is only given recognition because it was loaded with american fighters.

Bowe was good, he just severely underestimated the beast from Eastern Europe, TWICE, and now he's a walking wreck of a man because of his ignorance

At the time of the first Golota fight, Bowe was widely considered the best HW in the world.

    By whom?

This is the guy who threw away his belt rather than face Lewis.

The only "great" fighter he ever beat was Holyfield, and that was back when Holyfield had not yet reached his peak power. - He later lost to Holyfield, who had by then put on about 15 lbs of muscle and was actually a better fighter, despite his age.

Oh, right, Bowe beat Tubbs, Seldon, Doakes ... :rofl :rofl :rofl

A peak Golota LOST to a shot, fat (and weight drained) brain damaged version of Bowe TWICE lololololol.

Got stopped in 3 by a washed up Tyson.

Didn't make it out the 1st round against NORTH American Lennox Lewis.

    ROFL!

Chris Byrd (A natural Middleweight) is a greater Heavyweight than every Eastern European Heavyweight that ever existed outside of Wlad. FACT.

The #1 Eastern European Heavyweight of all time, would still be getting knocked out by golfers and part-time furniture deliverymen if wasn't for his AMERICAN trainer. FACT. And likely would be forced to get a part-time job himself, because he would be a journeyman if the U.S. had continued to field it's elite Heavyweight sized athletes in the sport.

Any success a Eastern European nation has had in the Heavyweight division has been wholly at the discretion of the United States of America.

    And you're welcome. :smooch

By most boxing fans and media. Lewis was considered a soft, boring, china-chinned hype job.
A lot of people still have Bowe on their top 10 ATG HW list, not that I agree with that, but they do.

Golota got robbed against Byrd, clearly

he quit for reasons known best to himself against shot Tyson

shame he wasn't right in the head, one of the best fighters of the 90's to never hold a world title

very well put, yes they were ignorant about the talent in europe and russia
and i think they were often ignorant by choice....

its funny i use to train in a boxing club where the coach tony morrison was a black heavyweight from the 1980's
    and i remember him saying
"there are no good heavyweights now, just a bunch of europeans and russians"

there were some good fighters in his era like dokes and thomas etc
but interestly always found a way not to fight them
    or rematch witherspoon etc
but to many idiots once you got the "linear" championship you are no
longer required to fight the best.
and they can say they are true champions because they never took the belt from you lol
