Andrew Golota is basically a headcase off the mean streets. He grew up fighting dirty and when under pressure instinct takes over, and, BAM the other guy is coughing up his nuts. You can see that for stretches he's really trying to behave himself. There was a point where Bowe rabbit punched him (on purpose or by accident, who knows) and immediately the crown jewels take a retaliatory hit. That's just how he was.
Golota also resorted to biting Samson Po’uha on the shoulder when he was in a bit of trouble in their fight. Then he also quit when he was way out in front against Michael Grant and facing his first bit of adversity. Then he was like a deer in the headlights against Lewis and Brewster (though you could argue he was just caught cold especially in the Brewster fight) and arguably against Tyson. Golota has a history of questionable behaviour when he was under the pump. He either fouled, quit or folded. A pity because he was pretty good when he was focused.
I think Golota didn't just want to beat Bowe in that second fight, he wanted to, as George said (paraphrase) whup him....bad. He took things personally and imo didn't care about the fight's official result. Bowe was done nearly two rounds before the stoppage, but the referee let him keep taking punishment. It was almost as though Golota just wanted the fight to end anyway....especially while it was obvious he was winning. Could have been running out of gas and worried about Bowe possibly regaining his legs (if this last is true then AG was blind). I love Bowe, but he dismally lost that fight. Imo it should have gone to the scorecards. Bowe needed a loss imo, not just the disputed one to Evander (and yeah, I think that 2nd EH/RB decision could have gone either way).
Imo he couldn't stand that Bowe remained standing after he threw everything and the kitchen sink and just wanted out.
Yeah, and tired of the ref getting on him. Just plain tired and feeling really mean and frustrated. One of the dumbest parts is the fact that it would have been SUCH a big win on paper had he not given up. Even so, it kept him well up in the ranks until he met monsters like Tyson and Lewis. The Golota fights are when I stopped seeing Bowe as the champion of the world. Up to then (including the second EH fight) I thought he really was the best in the world. FWIW I had Bowe ahead by two points in the 2nd EH.
I think it was a case of him quitting despite clearly winning the fights, he couldn't handle the fact that he had to fight in the trenches against a game Bowe.
He once landed a nasty head butt on Nicholson, a semi-decent fringe contender type. The butt had a lingering effect on Nicholson who was losing, but still in the fight, then Golota stopped him in the next round. Head butts, biting, low blows. Golota was cowardly when pressed and lacked heart. A reason I think he fouled.
