from what i read, he suffered a broken facial bone (cheekbone?) vs tyson and risked serious permanent damage by continuing. by quitting, even though he was booed out of the place and is still ridiculed, he did the right thing

you could see him wince in pain during the austin fight and try to buy time to move his arm into place...unfortunately it was during the round and Austin punched him in the face.

Very unfortunate injury. Hope Golota can heal quickly, and get a shot at Valuev soon.

Tyson fractured his cheek bone. I dont think his trainer was aware of this as he kept trying to put the gumshield back in his mouth by Golota refused. In his last fight he dislocated his elbow hence the injury above and tore all the tendons in the process. Its quite visible from the tape.

I actually thought that even with the hurt arm, he looked pretty good for the 3 minutes against Austin. He stood his ground after the KD, hit Austin with some leather and actually evaded some big punches. He also showed a better chin than we've sometimes seen as he took some big shots and looked pissed by it.

Golota just cannot catch a break sometimes. I never question the guy's toughness...this is a hurt business, and if someone feels their body is damaged and they cannot continue, then retire. In any other sport, you would not be ridiculed for such an injury at all.

These are guys with wives or kids or whatever. They don't need to go out on their shield just so fans won't call them names.

Golota never gets a break because he always breaks down mentally. I mean what on earth was he on when he fought Bowe? As for the Tyson fight his injury only became apparent after the bout. The crowd gave him hell for it though and flung everything except the kitchen sink at the poor guy. By the time he left the arena he was drenched!!

I heard that when you tear a ligament that swelling is followed by bruising.

Intense bruising always follows a bad strain or tear be it tendon or muscle. Heres Chuck Liddells hamstring after he pulled it preparing for a fight:

That's some bad brusing. I had similar in one place a long time ago when I got hit by a football player's helmet on my elbow, but it was just one place.
