Actually, Tyson couldn't do a thing to Golota in the 2nd round. Golota was holding his own, even with a broken bone in his face.
LOL, right... he wasn't looking for point deductions. He wanted to see Bowe on the floor and a stoppage.
They were both non-title fights. Golota was given a shot at the title the 10 months later, and he was starched in 1 round.
Yes. What's your point? At the time, Bowe was held in much higher regards than Lewis, who was busy being hugged by Akinwande and watching Oliver McCall have a mental breakdown inside the ring when he was two weeks removed from rehab. Obviously, back-to-back wars like the caliber Bowe and Golota had took a lot out of both men. Neither were EVER the same again, but that in no way precludes them from having been the two best heavyweights in the world when they fought, despite your insinuations to the contrary. :smoke
Nope, you are wrong on that one. Many, I mean many, believed they were the two best fighters at the time. And a large majority believed Golota was going to win. Two separate telecasts both were saying the same things before the fight happened. Regardless, I don't seee how anyone could not like Golota. Every fight was interesting for one reason or another. And aside from the Sultan fight, so are Wlads. And Lennox and Tyson had some stinkers, but they were always entertaining. Golota belongs in that handful.
You have the advantage of hindsight to help dsicredit this view, but it was widely held at the time, and I still maintain it was the truth. Unless you think all-out wars like Bowe-Golota II are common place in the heavyweight division, you should be willing to concede that neither fighter was EVER the same after that--not even close. Inciendetally, the heavyweight division has not seen a fight of that magnitude since! :smoke
We may never see a fight like that again.. yet so many "boxing fans" either discredit, dislike, or have no respect for Andrew. So many people want to bring out just the filth. Only people with a true understanding of boxing will have some "admiration" for the man. I personally think he's still a major threat in the heavyweight division.
Gentlemen, Please don't get my words twisted. -While broadcaster,at the time, may have stated that Golota and Bowe were the two best heavyweight in the world; I disagree. And, I think history (Lewis KO1 Golota, the fact that Bowe had lost his titles prior to the fight, the fact that Bowe will be remembered as a waste of talent and Golota as a foot note) supports my opinion. -I am not a Golota-hater, I enjoy watching most of his fights. Though, I don't think he's as great of a fighter as many of his fans on this board seem to believe. In fact, I don't think he's accomplished anything to warrant such praise. -While his fights with Golota most likely did a lot of damage to Bowe, keep in mind that: 1. Bowe's weight issues also played a big role in his demise 2. Bowe's three fights with Holyfield are usually credited with also playing a big role in his undoing. 3. History has demonstrated that Bowe is just plain nuts -While Golota can, can, be entertaining sometimes, sometimes, I do not think he has anything remotely close to the mental toughness of a champion. If he had won the title at any point during his career (and he has a had plenty of opportunities, and will probably see more), his psychological inconsistency would have garuanteed a short reign.
This was the entire point of my post! atsch That Golota and Bowe WERE the two best heavyweights at the time, and that the this fact is often dismissed because of what happened afterwards. Too convenient! It neglects the fact that when the two best heavyweights on the planet were doing battle, Lewis faced a hugger and a cryer, keeping him fresh, whereas, Bowe and Golota essentially ENDED each other's run at the top in two brutalizing wars. You don't have to agree with my beliefs on this matter, but to me, anyone who dismisses Golota or Bowe based on Lewis-Golota just doesn't get it!
Golota-Byrd, 116-112 Golota Golota-Ruiz, 114-111 Golota :deal I will happily debate my scorecards on these bouts with anyone who disagrees, particularly Golota-Byrd which I just rewatched this past weekend.
His biggest wins are actually losses to Riddick Bowe, Ruiz, Byrd (draw) and Micheal Grant. He was completely destroyed by Tyson, Brewster, Lewis. Does anybody have a better resume than Golota?
