...what a fricken shambles, and a great example of the current credability of world boxing organisations:

    from Boxing News 24 - Sept 8th 2010.

Ivaylo Gotzev, advisor to World Boxing Association (WBA) Interim World Champion Gennady Golovkin, says he has an easy remedy to the current confusing situation among WBA Middleweight champions: The WBA should either mandate Golovkin into a fight for the full world championship or order a fight between Golovkin and “Super” champion Felix Sturm.

Gotzev was reacting to news the WBA is considering a fight between #2 rated Hassan N’Dam N’Jkam and #3 rated Avtandil Khurtsindze for their middleweight championship, bypassing Golovkin who won their interim title by knocking out Milton Nunez last August.

“The WBA elevated Felix Sturm to super champion and let him avoid fighting Golovkin as his mandatory,” recounts Gotzev.

“Then they mandated that Anthony Mundine fight Golovkin for the vacant belt. We won the purse bid, but Mundine bailed because he knew he would get knocked out. Then we ended up knocking out Nunez for the interim belt. So now we don’t understand how N’Jkam can fight Khurtsindze for yet another WBA belt?”

Gotzev maintains that if the WBA goes forward with this fight, the only reasonable route for Golovkin would be for them to order a fight between Sturm and Golovkin for super champion status.

“We’re going to stay on this until we sort out this WBA mess. I’ve been in contact with them and we’ll file a formal protest if they don’t put Gennady in the fight for the regular belt or put him in against Felix Sturm. Gennady is the best middleweight in the world and we’ll fight any of those guys, one after the other. If Golovkin fights Sturm, then we’ll agree to let N’Jkam fight Khurtsindze.”

Gotzev says he’s enjoyed good relations with the WBA in the past and hopes the current confusion is just a minor issue that will be fixed quickly. “I have faith in the WBA and hope that this misunderstanding will be quickly resolved.”

WBA is a disgrace,You gotta feel for Golovkin number 1 ranked WBC and number 1 ranked WBA and still can't get a World Title shot, there are a lot of Fighters out there that Fear this tough walk up Fighter who has enormous power in both hands, and for this reason he just can not seem to get many fights.!!!!!

WBA middleweight champion Felix Sturm (33-2-1, 14 KO’s) will be fighting number #7 World Boxing Association contender Giovanni Lorenzo (29-2, 21 KO’s) on Saturday night at the Lanxess-Arena, Cologne, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany.

This will be the first fight for Sturm in over 14 months, as he’s been out of action because of management squabbles with his old promoter Universum. But now that Sturm isn’t with them, the hope is that he’ll start facing some of the best fighters in the middleweight division with the time that he has left in his career.

Although Lorenzo is decent step up from who Sturm has been facing in the past, it’s not a big enough step to open the eyes of boxing fans and get their interest. Sturm should have chosen to fight WBA middleweight interim champion Gennady Golovkin or number #2 ranked Hassan N’Dam N’ Jikam.

Those guys would have been huge tests for Sturm and he might not have passed them. Loenzo, 29, is a safer choice for Sturm because Lorenzo has already been beaten by the likes of Raul Marquez and Sebastian Sylvester. That alone must have been a strong reason for Sturm to select Lorenzo over arguably more dangerous opponents.

While Lorenzo can punch a little, his hand speed is slow, his stamina poor, his boxing skills fairly basic and his ability to adapt not good. This is the kind of opponent that Sturm should be able to beat using his jab alone.

Lorenzo is going to have to figure out a way to get past Sturm’s powerful jab and get near enough to him to land his power shots. If he tries to fight Sturm on the outside then he has no chance because Sturm is simply a lot better than him.

This should be a fairly easy fight for Sturm unless he’s lost a lot of his abilities in the long time away from the ring. If he does beat Lorenzo, then Sturm needs to start taking on some of the better fighters. I don’t expect him to that, because he’s already talking about fighting a rematch against German Sylvester, who Sturm already beaten by a lopsided 12 round decision in 2008. Sturm will likely hold onto the WBA title until he’s forced by the WBA to fight either Golovkin or Jikam.

I see Sturm losing both of those fights and then he’ll be free to fight anyone he wants without criticism. But as far as this Saturday’s fight goes, Sturm should beat Lorenzo without any problems. Lorenzo is too basic, too stiff and too slow to beat a quality fighter like Sturm. Lorenzo has never beaten any top tier fighter during his career and I don’t expect him to now.

By Kamel Messani - Boxing Scene dot com - 13th Sept 2010

At a time when everyone waiting for a battle at the top for the vacant WBA "regular" title between the two top middleweight fighters, Gennady Golovkin of Kazakhstan (WBA Interim Champion) and the Franco-Cameroonian Hassan N'Dam N'Jikam (Number 2 WBA), the WBA made a surprise announcment that Hassan N’Dam would face Avtandil Khurtsidze (number 3 WBA) for the vacant title. For more information, we contacted the promotor of Hassan N'Dam, Sebastien Acaries.

"The WBA had designated the German Felix Sturm as the "super champion" so the WBA's “regular” title was vacant. Consequently two co-challengers were nominated to contest the latter title: Gennady Golovkin and Anthony Mundine, following an auction held for this fight, Team Golovkin won the scholarship offers," Acaries told ***********.com.

"However, strangely, Mundine has turned down the offer, so the WBA has designated my boxer as the new co-challenger. Soon thereafter I was contacted by Team Golovkin, who made me an offer, but it did not suit me. Therefore, according to the rules of the WBA, a date for a purse bid was required. Nevertheless, given the impatience of Golovkin's agents, the WBA gave them an interim championship."

"In parallel, I also contacted the WBA for permission to organize a fight between Hassan N'Dam (Issue 2 WBA) and Avtandil Khurtsidze (WBA No. 3) for the "regular" title. My application was received favorably, so I could go into negotiations with Team Khurtsidze. Agreements have been concluded. The fight will take place October 30 in Paris and will be broadcast on Direct 8."

Initially the WBA ordered that the winner of the battle between the Gennady Golovkin and Colombian Milton Nunez would have to face Hassan N'Dama within 90 days for the "regular" title. Team Golovkin attempted to enter into negotiations with the company Ami Production (Acaries) which has not responded.

"Indeed, representatives of Golovkin tried to contact me to return to the stage of negotiations and even made me an offer. But as I've already said, I had finalized an agreement with Team Khurtsidze since July. It made sense not to cancel the fight toin order to meet the demands of Team Golovkin," Acaris added.

Boxing fans around the world await Golovkin vs. N'Dam impatiently, and many experts predict a great battle on the level of a Leonard vs. Hagler type classic.

"I hope with all my heart that the battle between Golovkin and Hassan will happen before the end of 2010 or early 2011 and I sincerely believe that these two boxers are among the best current middleweights, and it’s for this reason it is important to promote such an event," concluded Acaries.

    You'll like this Sally:

The Melbourne Herald Sun has not printed a single word on this bout since it was announced - not one word.

Until this morning, when the TV section ran about 3 sentences, and the gist of it was about Mundine's brag of being better than Bradman.

    It posed the question:

It's even sillier when you go back to basics and think about what 'World Champion' actually means - or what it's intended to mean.

It should, and used to many years ago, mean the 'Best in the World'.

There's a strong argument that says the titles should simply revert to being called 'IBF title' or 'WBC title', and drop the 'World' bit off.

But the charlatans and swindlers controlling boxing would never entertain such a thought.
