Good point.. GGG is into his 30s already where many fighters start to slip. I am not sure dropping down in weight would be a great idea for him.

He's currently treading water while he waits for a big fight. The WBC have mandated a shot for GGG so in a couple of months either he'll get his shot at Cotto or the vacant title.

Hopefully Lee beats Quillan as Lee is more likely to unify with Golovkin having agreed a fight last year before it was called off due to Golovkin's father dying. That will give him another unification fight.

That just leaves Taylor's IBF belt. Taylor's likely to be side lined while he sorts out his legal issues and personally the idea of Golovkin destroying what little is left of Taylor is unappealing to me. Taylor should just retire before he gets seriously hurt.

So the next few months will be crucial. Best case scenario be beats Monroe Jr, Cotto and Lee. Worst case, he picks up vacant title, Lee loses and Quillan goes into hiding and Golovkin should then seriously think about moving on unless a Canelo fight is available.

Taylor was already stripped. N'Dam and Lemieux are supposed to fight for the vacant belt.

GGG has to wait until Cotto (the bigger draw) decides to pick him. Fight making ability always rests with the bigger draw regardless of who has what titles or who's hype train is currently the strongest.

Because he cant make anywhere near as much fighting those guys, thats why.

Cotto-GGG is a PPV fight, where Cotto is the strong A-side and keeps most of the revenue.

The guys you name are regular TV fights.

Cotto-Canelo is a PPV fight that is bigger financially than Cotto-GGG, but Cotto is not the strong A-side in that equation and does not get to keep most of the PPV revenue like he does vs GGG. So his final take is likely similar or less.

Bottom line: Cotto avoiding GGG because he knows he gets pulped, there is no other reason. Its not a lesser payday, its not low-profile, its not meaningless in terms of legacy.

It is simply a fight that Cotto is not skilled and talented enough to win, that is all there is to it.
