I do, but when a guy like GGG has so much hype, and would run through guys like Hagler, Leonard, Hearns, Jones, Monzon, Hopkins,Toney, according to his Goons, I can't help but look at his current resume and laugh. His fanbase anoint him as he's the best MW of all time, but other than Hagler or Monzon for example, everyone else pretty much tested themselves and moved up win or lose. I see GGG in the same scenario.

It's a good post. Indeed GGG can stay and smash everyone at MW, and we shouldn't criticize him fot it. He'll still be a great fighter and one of the best MW champions.

But if he wants to be among the very greatest, he does have to take the risk and do something extraordinary, such as moving up and winning a title at 168 and 175. I could see him beating Stevenson who is getting old, and he has a chance (although definitely a clear underdog) against both Kovalev and Ward.

Well, yes, those statements are utterly ridiculous. You don't have to punish him by launching him up to 175lbs to get spanked by Ward just because his fans said dumb shit, though.

How many times did Ward say he was staying at 168 lbs.? Funny that he moves up. Ward was adamant that he would stay at 168 lbs. What changed? Oh yeah, he found out he couldn't make 168 lbs. I remember an interview where he's even relieved he moved up in weight.

Remember, Dawson thought he could make 168 lbs. too. A lot of these fighters have egos like that. People say Mayweather is a small welterweight when he couldn't even make 144 lb. catchweight.

Ward hasn't made 168 lbs. since ~2013, and he comes in the same weight as Barrera, a legit LHW. Ward is a legit LHW. End of this. :hi:

Ok. As far as right now goes, with Sergei it might be a little premature to be thinking about a GGG fight imo. Now if he's one of the only options available then I guess go for it. But I've seen fighters rushed and careers destroyed, going into fights like that early. So IDK about that one.

Both you and IB have fair points. As a fan, I would like to see GGG in a 50-50 fight so we can see how good (or overhyped) he actually is, but we can't expect it.

One of the real shames was that GGG's first promoter was a real idiot who came up with weak opponents time and time again while GGG was demanding world - class opponents (which is why GGG left).

Not everyone can go up in weight like magic - know from personal experience. The only way I could put on twenty pounds would be to eat rubbish for months and not train - or do steroids. :nono

GGG is no Fury putting a spare tyre around his gut on between fights - how do these guys think he is going to put on 10 quality pounds of athleticism?

I mean over the next few years if he stays at MW, by the time he gets done with CEJ, BJS, Canelo and Jacobs, by then the drumbeat for a match with Sergiy, Khytrov, Quigley or Murata or a few of the JMW's will be in full effect because at the pace they're moving these guys a long they'll be ready for a step up by then, but hopefully their promoters don't make any misguided quantum leaps with them like Oscar did with Teixiera.:verysad
