I'm not sure I'd consider Andy Lee good enough to expose a decent prospect, let alone somebody like Golovkin who is possibly a step ahead of being considered a "prospect." He's not established, quite clearly, but considering his background and his dominance so far a prospect seems a little far fetched. Andy Lee can't deal with anything at mid-short range. His defensive skill at that range is so prohibitively poor I don't think he deals with any kind of prospect. He's too easy to hit, he's bolt up right, and there really isn't a lot of imagination in his work. Any prospect worth his salt is not going to spend 10-12 rounds on the end of Andy's jab, and you get the impression when he can't maintain that range he's near enough done for because not only is his defence lacking he's always seemed weak and frail at the weight. Chavez fight summed it up, he can look good for a few rounds as his southpaw style, decent handspeed, decent jab can pose initial problems, but only initially. Rubio I agree with.
Would Andy Lee actually beat Kassim Ouma? That's not a bad fight. I'd take a bit of convincing he could.
What does being 'world class' prove? John Mugabi never stopped a tough, world ranked fighter yet he's gone down as one of the hardest hitters of all time. Eugene Hart was another massive puncher yet he didn't knock out a world class fighter either. I'm not sure any Pipino Cuevas victim could be considered elite either. Fighters don't need to knock out brilliant opposition to prove their power. If destroying a tough fighter like Ishida isn't enough proof, I'm not sure what is.
*yawn* Mugabi managed to shake up the seriously tough Hagler who, best I recall, had only ever been seriously hurt by Tommy Hearns. That's how you know - it's not just the stoppage, it's the fact they're hurting guys who otherwise don't get hurt. Ishida appears durable, but Kirkland didn't get a chance to lay anything on him and Paul Williams was never known for his power. Your second paragraph makes no sense: If knocking out a career LMW doesn't convince me of the brutal power of a career MW, then you don't know what will? Em... how about knocking out a career MW with a proven chin? I'm not saying Golovkin can't punch and isn't heavy handed, he clearly is. What I'm saying and you appear to have missed is that I see no grounds to say silly things like "he'll KO Martinez", etc.
If he hurts Sergio, yeah I can see GGG KO'ing him. Martinez goes full on machismo when he's banged and I can't see him coming out on top by recklessly trading with him. It's one of the best fights in boxing that can be made imo. Sergio is not getting any younger so I don't want it to marinade either. Sergio with those low hands and bobbing head inviting GGG to come into him so he can try and catch him with a blind shot. Don't blink!:yep
It's not that much of a stretch to say Golovkin can KO Martinez. The Chavez fight was a little reminder to people that he's a great boer, a great mover, has good power himself, he's a complete package but yes...he can be pressured (although Chavez didn't really achieve it) and yes he can be hurt at any time if a shot lands. He's not one of the great middleweight chins. That's only going to become more and more the case as time goes on. I don't think Chavez punches that hard either, so that was eye opening to me. No doubt Chavez can punch, but punch for punch I'm pretty certain Golovkin cracks harder. If you look at the weight of evidence that is fairly clear too. There are a good number of people on his record he should have stopped, that are easy to hit, if you're a real power puncher. If Golovkin was thrown in with prime John Duddy (if there was one), Billy Lyell or even Zbik that all went the distance with him they would again be argued as mismatches where Golovkin would be highly favoured to get another stoppage, and we'd still be discussing whether his power is truly legit to the extent a few of us think.
To be fair Golovkin ruined Lujuan Simon in under a round a career 160lber who although no world beater had never previously been stopped and went the distance with AA a supposedly huge puncher at 160 and the middle weight king at that time.
