As you know, I like Golovkin, but I concur with this. I don't like the comments myself.

Find me a poll that says Canelo won, doesn't have to be from this forum.

Ask the mexican fans who booed Canelo at the fight.

The funniest part I find about Golovkin’s comments is this dude really believes he’s a star. His own fans don’t buy his fights. He couldn’t lock a Vegas venue or hold ppv because of the contrary. He’s not a star.

    That fight was never viable.

I think they were both massaging their egos in public.

Andre had been inactive and hadn't made SMW in a long time.

GG was ready to fight Lemiuex before looking at fighting Canelo afterwards.

It's a tough one for me.

I lean towards Bernard, but then I have to factor in that he had a size advantage over most of his opponents.

HOpkins Started his career at 177 according to Boxrec . HOpkins usually had a size advantage over his opponents .

As far as filling arenas if Hopkins and Golovkin were fighting a good opponent at 160 which one would you pay to see ? THe guy who fights with pressure and looks for the KO or a slow the pace down and fight ugly style ?

GOlovkin has been the much more fan friendly boxer no doubt about it.

Golovkin would sooner have retired rather than fought Andre Ward. The man wanted absolutely nothing to do with him.

Sure it was Loudon. A legacy , career defining fight is always viable.

    It's an interesting debate.

Joppy didn't have a great resume but he looked to be a good fighter.

Yes, Tito only beat Joppy, but it was emphatic. I also think he could have beaten a number of other MW's, but obviously he didn't. That's just my opinion.

Bernard didn't have a great MW resume at 36/37, but I'd have to class Keith Holmes as a notable win.

In my opinion, Canelo didn't really have 3 MW fights before he fought GG. They may have been contested at the weight, but Smith and Khan obviously weren't both MW's.

You can compare stats and say that Canelo had many more fights at the higher weights, but that doesn't necessarily mean that he was a better overall fighter than Tito was at the weight.

I know mate, but I meant as in how realistic it was to make.

At that stage, neither guy was in a position to take it.

Andre didn't know if he could comfortably make the weight due to him being inactive and not having fought consistantly at the weight for a while.

GG was focused on fighting Canelo.

HBO wanted to build the fight.

It would have taken a lot for that fight to have happened.

I can't blame either guy for ducking.

    I'm really enjoying this thread.

I love the kind of back and forth type banter that you guys are having.

I've never been a huge fan of Bernard's, but I think you have to factor in the altitude in Equador for the first Mercado fight. The rematch was pretty emphatic.

I would have to have fancied Bernard over Canelo and Jacobs.

Nah dude ,HBO wanted Ward up at LHW against Kovalev and as far away from GGG as possible.

Of course he would rather have fought Canelo since he was a junior middle at the time. Ward was a career defining fight to prove his greatness and he wanted no part of it.

Roy Jones didn't have to move up and fight Toney , he could have stayed at MW and claim to have unfinished business against the likes of Quincy Taylor , Jorge Castro , Joe Lispsey , Lonnie Brady , Dana Rosenblatt etc.

Ward wanted that fight badly . If GGG felt the same way , it would have been an easy fight to make. Once GGG stipulated on a catch of 164 pounds , it was all over.

GG shouldn't receive any criticism for fighting Vanes. We should actually be grateful that he's kept his May date.

I didn't think he'd be fighting at all on that date.

This is a good post on a good thread, but I'll just make 2 points:

    1. Realistically, GG couldn't give Kell a C-W. It was too last minute.

    2. I can't rate Bernard's win over Oscar as being great. He looked awful against Sturm and Sturm was robbed. Bernard was also naturally much bigger.

I'd have loved to have seen Bernard vs GG.
