Golovkin moves to 168 to face Oosthuizen

Pirog is the only one who seems willing to fight Golovkin of those ones you listed and he is injured for the next six months. He's choosing to go for a really promising supermiddle because he can't get a good fight at 160. Do you really ****ing think he'd go this route if a fight with Lee, Pavlik or Macklin were possible? atsch

 

Bollocks. They pretend to fancy their chances when interviewed about it because they can't exactly say they don't want to fight this guy because they'd get their arse kicked.

IMO, if theres one guy people are wary of fighting its a banger that makes you no money at all. The only credit you really get is recognition from hardcore boxing fans that know how good GG is. It isn't going to be greeted with an eruption of praise and you're not going to make better money than fighting somebody average. Why the hell would Martinez want to get in the ring with GG in all seriousness? Martinez deserves all the praise in the world for taking and making a lot of good fights but its very easy (and understandable) to just sidestep Golovkin quietly and look for other fights and who can begrudge him if he does...

Golovkin's never been dropped, never seemingly really been badly hurt in his whole career approaching 400 fights in total, punches like a mule (see the number of actual KO's he scores) and take into account the word going round gyms and we're starting to paint a picture of why its so hard to get him a fight. The best fight I can see him getting is Pirog because he's in a similar position. He's also a good kid that can punch, is awkward as **** and I think that fight would be a trade fight - big time.

 

I don't recall them saying they tried to negotiate with any of them. Do you or you just presuming they didn't?

Yeah they mentioned he sparred guys alot lot bigger than him in the gym and he claimed he couldn't remember the last time he'd been hurt by a punch.

This is partly why I don't like the fight. Sergio is getting on so if GG fights a name it helps put money in the pot for that very fight. Sergio knows his time is limited so if the price is right, the fight happens imo.

 

Its another reason why do we not only need less titles but less weight divisions. Fighters need to be more reluctant to jump up and down in weight. If the next weight class was 175, Golovkin wouldn't be so keen.

 

I understand the reasoning but Super Middle's been a pretty good division.

 

Its alright we'll just build one of Golovkin behind him and move Carl so he looks like hes ducking him.

The guys are just Light heavys 7lbs at that size is just not that big a difference, getting rid of the division would just make Middle and Light heavy better. I'm not a complete believer in the original 8 but 17 is too many. If size difference between the fighters is the issue people make out we would have same day weigh ins.

 

I'm all for cutting the number of divisions (especially those at the lower weights) but SM has more than earned its right to exist. Its been great fun over the years.
As for same day weigh ins, I'm inclined to agree with you however.

 

He had signed to fight Pirog before Pirog pulled out due to injury. For his fight against Fuchigami, he had offered fights from the highest ranked fighters to the lowest on the WBA until one accepted. This meant Murray, Quillin, Lee and Hope were some of the names that refused.

I'm assuming Pavlik won't fight Golovkin for multiple reasons. He's an alcoholic looking to cash out against a name. He hasn't faced anyone good since his loss to Martinez.

Golovkin has mentioned fighters he wanted and Pavlik and Macklin in an interview. I see no reason to doubt him. It's illogical to think his team have not explored these avenues before deciding to move up to fight a massive supermiddle. He never mentioned Tommy Gunn specifically in interviews unlike Macklin and Pavlik, amongst other top names like Martinez and co.

 

Don't disagree with you its been a fantastic division but many of those fights would still have occured either at middle or lightheavy. Furthermore, with less divisions it would have forced guys like Calzaghe to fight better opposition as the top 15 at that division would have been of higher calibre.

I have yet to hear any legit reason against same day weigh ins.
