As of ‘92 McCallum had one loss by decision to Kalambay.. Who has Jacobs beaten that’s in Mike’s league?? I’d favor Curry and McCallum over Jacobs
Mike fought peak versions of Kalambay, Graham and Toney. If you constantly fight top level fighters with great technical skills, then you're going to have close, competitive fights. Mike was a master boxer. Jacobs has never fought anyone like those guys.
Styles make fights. Kalambay out jabbed McCallum and won fairly convincingly. Yet, he could be knocked out with timing and speed. Nunn was elite. Toney beat him but before the knockout i thought he was winning in a close affair. Nunn couldn't make the weight anymore comfortably and moved upto super middleweight after his loss to Toney in 1991. The division was loaded back then. This content is protected
Jacobs is so overrated IMO.. I just don’t see what you see I guess.. I grew up watching Donald, he was P4P one of the best for years!! Many of us thought he’d be the one to eventually beat Hagler. Now he never did much around Middleweight.. But was a MONSTER at welterweight, sadly I think he got bored a bit and lost focus, but at his peak he’d ice Jacobs, Curry was looking great vs McCallum at 154 until he got caught with a great shot.. I’ll take that Curry over Jacobs, unless Danny comes in 20 pounds heavier than Donald on fight night..
Jacobs easily would come in 20 pounds heavier than Curry if Curry trained. Curry just wasn't a 160 pounder and Jacobs is big for that weight.
loaded division, fighting frequently at that. Just browsed a 94 magazine -check the fights that went down in a month: Tyson's sparring partner Oliver McCall Ko 1 over Art Card? James Toney, Frank Tate, Julian Jackson, Vinny Pazienza, Raul Marquez, Oba Carr, Kostya Tszyu, Vernon Forrest, John John Molina, Orlin Norris, Harold Brazier, Tracey Patterson all had KOs. Buddy Mcgirt, Roger Mayweather, Livingstone Bramble, Virgil Hill, Henry Maske, Juan Coggi, Junior Jones & Carlos Deleon all got the decision. Pretty good month of fights. No catchweight-queens, no-if they money is right cries.
I think he takes a couple of losses in that era. He's not unbeatable. The boxers back then were better than Jacobs and Canelo. Also, there's no proof Alvarez is a big puncher because he knocked out two guys who have glass jaws - Khan and Kirkland. The other guys he knocked out were old men, journeymen, and european level fighters. This content is protected Jacobs threw a lot of hooks, crosses and some jabs but Golovkin lead with his superior jab and made Jacobs look a bit amateurish at times. Jacobs used his size, strength (he did look a lot bigger in the ring) to duke it out with Golovkin on the inside but he didn't really avoid Golovkin's jab enough to give him the W. I'm sure he would have done well and beaten top names but he'd lose to 2 or 3 also imo. Golovkin is one of my favorite fighters but you gotta be neutral and not be too biased. I think the old adage of ''go to the body and the head will follow'' might be what ultimately beats Golovkin. Golovkin is in a weak era and it's not his fault. Billy Joe might beat him now as Golovkin has declined a bit but he may not be able to get around the pressure and jab. I think Golovkin beats Julian Jackson, McClellan, Don Curry, Toney (unmotivated version), Kalambay. Golovkin has trouble with Jones Jr but holding his own coming forward with pressure. I don't believe Golovkin hasn't been hurt just not hurt significantly enough for him to go down. I think he's learned how to soak shots up well and being underrated defensively. Golovkin was apprehensive vs Lemieux because he felt the power so he boxed and patiently worked his way in for the stoppage victory. Jones Jr would catch him with an uppercut coming in and land body shots (like Jacobs did) and get out of the kitchen quicker also. Toney beats him depending on the Toney which shows up. The ''unmotivated'' Toney who fought Tiberi after McCallum would have problems with Golovkin. Toney took Tiberi lightly that night and was notorious for taking time off from training in fight camp. He potentially can beat McCallum if he gauges distance well but Golovkin has never shown he can avoid body shots as Kalambay did vs McCallum by moving backwards. He comes forward and gets hit. His style is a pressing boxer puncher. Yes, he holds his own and beats some but would take L's, too. Also, when Hagler was operating Mike McCallum was in a different division. Hagler retired in 1987 when Mike was at super welterweight. Mike moved up to middleweight in 1988. I know Mike said on youtube Hagler ducked him but that's untrue based on the history of both. Just pointing that out randomly because someone mentioned it in this thread.
Marvin didn't duck Mike. From what I've read, Bob Arum had to talk Marvin into fighting Mugabi in 1986. So he'd already lost his hunger before he fought Ray. I don't think Ray, Duran and Hearns wanted him though, and it appears that Manny steered Tommy away from him, wanting Tommy to fight Duran instead.
Pirog was on his way to being that if not for his back issues. Jacobs was the last fight where his back was semi healthy. Needless to say Jacobs was starched.
