There have been plenty of comparisons made between current middleweight titlist Gennady "GGG" Golovkin and a young Mike Tyson. I think those comparisons are accurate and justified.

I went and looked up the record of Tyson before the Buster Douglas fight for some more information. And what I found helps to further add evidence to Golovkin's meteoric rise in the sport.

Between the time he fought for his first title (against Berbick in 1986) and when he lost to Douglas (1990), Tyson put up this record in title fights (including against Berbick):

    10-0-0 (9) in around 39 months (3 years and 3 months)

That is a phenomenal record. All wins, with only one of the wins not coming by knockout.

    Now let's turn to Golovkin.

GGG's career record in major title fights:

15-0-0 (15) in around 57 months (4 years and 9 months). And counting.

To further help illustrate how impressive this title record is, consider that Andre Ward -- someone who has been mentioned as a potential rival to Golovkin -- has only fought for a major title 7 times in his entire career.

Golovkin has knocked out 20 straight opponents, and 15 of those KO's/TKO's came in major championship fights.

Golovkin is legit. How legit still remains to be seen. But if the early buzz around the sales for the Golovkin-Lemieux seats holds true, and the PPV numbers are good for the bout, then we could soon find out just "how legit" Golovkin truly is because he could be the next real cash cow of the sport. Someone that couldn't be avoided by fighters around 160 pounds who are looking to get paid.

The difference is that Tyson wanted to eat your liver; Gennady just wants to flatten it a bit, pat you on the head and call you a good boy.
