Having seen all the memorable fights of both of these guys, I have to pick Golovkin. Martinez, for all his talent, still carries around some fundamental flaws due to picking up boxing so late. His balance could be better, his defense could be tighter, his footwork could be better. The fact that he's almost 38 and relies heavily on speed/reflexes doesn't help. To me this fight looks eerily similar to a Naz/Barrera clash. A tricky southpaw with power against a strong orthodox technique oriented fighter with a great chin. If history has shown us anything, it's that solid technique trumps tricky boxers. Golovkin has the technique, punching placement, and obviously the power to take full advantage of any balance issues Sergio may have. In order for Sergio to win he has to try to box from the outside, but at this point in his career I doubt he has what it takes to throw Golovkin off. Golovkin looks about as calm as a prime Toney in the ring, Sergio wont be able to frustrate him. If Martinez beats fat boy this is one of the best fights out there to be made.
Martinez takes it. GGG will struggle when he fights someone who can dicate the range of the fight. Obviously ESB is on a hype train right now (As always) so idiots will be adamant that GGG KO's Sergio in six.
Almost as idiotic as saying Sergio KO's the guy who has never even been dropped in 300 am and 24 pro fights?
Sergio has just knocked out for guys in a row who have never been stopped. And one of those fighters never been down as a pro and amateur also
Serhiy Dzinziruk had never been dropped amateur or pro and look what happened, not sure how many amateur fights he had but he had fought in the European and World championships and competed in the Olympics. He also had 35 pro fights. He may not have been as good an amateur as Golovkin but he fought many fights at the top level in the amateurs never being dropped. I don't think he stops Golovkin but I think he outpoints him over the 12 rounds to get the points win.
Wow, great post. And I gotta give you full credit for your Toney comparison since I was too afraid of being ridiculed for saying it.:thumbsup Spot on:good
