So, let's be real here. Golovkin looked pretty bad on the inside when Monroe decided to stop and mix it up with him. What gives? He also took like 3-4 big shots in a row to his face, if I remember correctly. I mean, he wasn't shaken which is impressive but he looked like a damn goof getting blasted like that. I was also surprised to see he seemed kind of gassed at certain points. Cause for concern?
The success Monroe had on the inside, it was allowed to him by Golovkin. Go watch round 4 or 5 and then go watch the first 20 seconds of round six. It'll show you explicitly clear what Golovkin looks like when he's allowing you to have success on the inside, and what he looks like when he's finished playing around.
"The ram absolutely craves attention. Aries will actually get jealous if everyone isn't watching him/her at all times." Gennady is an Aries.:deal
For the record I do believe GGG let Monroe have a few free shots, because he does want to put on a show because he gets off on it, not once in that match was he not in control, he does this a lot, after he hurt Murray to the body and dropped him, he didn't follow up with body work he went to his head, same for Stevens he dropped him hard early and could have gotten him out of there but he wanted to punish him for his transgressions. In some odd way GGG probably respected the decision Willie made to go toe to toe with him and wanted to let him think he was winning only to crush his dreams a round or two later, he likes to play with his opponents if you all hadn't noticed yet. He has a sadistic streak.
I thought he struggled on the inside too. i think he got tagged because he didn't expect Monroe to actually fight back specifically on the inside.
Well, there was a 5 year age difference. Monroe started throwing a lot of punches on the inside at a frantic pace, and yes, Gennady was getting hit by some of them. That's what inside fighting does to you. Luckily, Monroe can't punch, and Gennady has a terrific chin. He let Monroe unleash his wad, then cameback with his own artillery, which was more than enough to get the stoppage because Monroe couldn't defend as well. Monroe was made to quit in 6 for everyone to see.
That's why they bring in heavier sparring partners and have for for years because Golovkin doesn't bother with defence at times. Call it being bored or lapses in concentration but Golovkin doesn't have to take those shots and he shouldn't. I think it's real bad habit.
Hmmm ... two things here. Golovkin appears to have a really good engine - though the majority of his fights finish on the under we've seen him throwing continually and relentlessly beyond the half way mark against Ouma, Murray and Stevens even seeming to up his workrate as his opponent fades. Kovalev also had something to say on Gennadys stamina - to paraphrase 'the guy just doesn't get tired'. As to GGG 'getting hit for the fans' - well I don't quite see it that way, but I do think that (as against Murray) once he felt he had the measure of Monroe he was willing to get tagged a few times whilst seeking or trying to create an opening for the highlight reel. I'm not a huge fan of Abel Sanchez, but this is one thing you'll regularly hear him rebuking GGG for between rounds - the advice usually goes along the lines of 'it'll come, you don't have to go looking for it, just keep throwing / keep the pressure on'. In fact, rewatching the fight, I'm struck by the conspicuous absence of GGGs jab, which is typically such a major part of his game. Is it possible this was a deliberate strategy aimed at drawing the slicker Monroe into a firefight? I'm also noticing that during round 4 - Monroes most noticeably successful round -Golovkin is still doling out far more punishment than the southpaw and outlands him in power shots.
I wondered about GGG slowing down by round 4, I mean, in his previous fight against Murray he looked just as fresh in round 10 as in round 2
I'd argue Monroe is a better fighter than Murray, which is why he troubled Golovkin more than Murray did. Murray was SEVERELY overrated. I saw his fight against Khomitsky (in addition to his other 5 fights) to gauge how he'd do against Golovkin, and he's very average. For a big guy, downright bad and weak on the inside too.
