In the start of round 1, Bryant pushed Roy to the ropes easily, but once he had him there, he could't capitalize. Because Bryants swings were wide, almost only hooks, while Roy threw compact, powerful punshes on the inside. After tasting a bit of Roys power, Bryant lost heart and it also looks like he had stamina issues.

Throughout the fight Bryant walks Roy straight into the ropes many times, and when he starts to unload, Roy is happy curling up for a while before he retaliates. He survives by using his great reflexes in combination with mainly his guard, but also upper body movement.

If we are to use Roys fight against Bryant as a reference, Golovkin would get a chance to use his stuff. He'd get Roy against the ropes, and then the question is if he could slip his punshes threw and cause some damage. I can't think of many boxers who would be better at it.

Compare with when Glenn Johnson KO'd Roy. He walked him into the ropes, just like Bryant did, and then he stayed so close that some of Roys power were dimished. He showed some defence and varied his shots. In short, he didn't let Roy off the hook. I know that Roys fans like to pretend that Roy was a walking corpse, and while it's true he wasn't at his best, he would't have lasted for nine rounds as a zombie. Glenn came in with the perfect gameplan.

I still think Golovkin would be a dangerous fight for prime Roy at MW. The one thing that speaks to Golovkins disadvantage isn't Roys footwork but the combination of Roys power and Golovkins lack of defence. It's possibly that Roy would bail himself out by knocking Golovkin spark out.

 

Let's talk about that Johnson fight for a sec ,he was dealing with a Roy who was dead on his feet ,Roy's legs were gone he wa completely dehydrated so let's not go over board with that ..Most fighters who tried to pin Roy on the ropes got met with vicious combinations .I want to see GGG in there with someone one that can bang it's easy to walk guys down if you have no respect for their power ..

When Roy had his legs he wasa much diffrent monster ..Watcn the Telesco fight Roy invites him into the corner and look what happens ..A Roy with no legs gets brutally KO Ed by anyone expect if your Joe Calzaghe or Bernard Hopkins ..

 

I agree we haven't seen GGG with a power punsher yet. His lack of top opposition makes it hard to know the limit of his potential.

When it comes to prime Roy, I'm more impressed by his power than his footwork to be honest. But I'll have a look at his fight against Telesco.

 

Murray landed some really good clean shots on GGG and some great body shots as well...

Roy is a totally different animal, I really wonder If GGG can stick to his gameplan of cutting the ring off and coming forward after being blasted to the ribs like Roy would have been doing.

Roy was also extremely hard to hit clean.. And his speed was on another level.

This fight would come down to if GGG can handle tasting Roy's leather and not getting hesitant and discouraged like many of the other fighters Roy fought in his prime.

If GGG wasn't bothered by Roy's speed and power and could endure and keep coming forward then I say he finally catches Roy... but that is a big IF, as GGG has not been in the ring with anyone even close to that yet, and to be honest I don't think there are any fighters to test him right now like a prime Roy would have.

 

the last fight he had legs was against Clinton Woods, watch that. Compare and contrast with the Glenn Johnson fight, where he could no longer move.

Watch round 5 and 6. Woods becomes paralyzed, unable to throw a punch for a full round after all the punishing counters. The ref finally stops the fight out of mercy.

 

I use to,train at a gym where Eric Harding use to train a few yrs ago at he said of Roy It wasn't his hand speed that bothered him it was his foot work. He said every time he would fend off Jones attack when he would go go swing Roy would be on the othed side of the ring he was a diffucult fighter to catch ..

 

RJJ is a stylistic nightmare for GGG great hand speed combos footspeed reflexes and power. He would beat GGG going away.

 

Roy way too quick with the lead right. He would turn Golovkins face into a tomato.

 

Against Clinton Woods, Roy displayes the exactly same pattern as he did against Glenn Johnson and Bryant Brannon: Clinton walks him straight into the ropes over and over again. When Clinton starts to unleash, Roy protects. After three or four punshes, Clinton backs off. At one occasion, he tries to stay on the job. Roy then starts to retaliate with compact hooks and uppercuts with impressive power behind them.

Roy defends well when he's cornered, and he also has an effective offence. But he lacks the kind of ring generalship displayed by boxers like Floyd Mayweather, Larry Holmes or Wladimir Klitschko. His lifeline seems to be his speed and power, that will make any average opponent cover up, and try to beat Roy to the punsh, throwing one shot at the time. Roy then eats them and ****s them effortslessy.

Throw in any A-level pressure fighter who stays on the job, and you will see a different kind of fight. It needs to be someone with good pop. Joe Calzaghe and Carl Froch would probably make the initial rounds competitive, but Roy would survive and his powerful counterpunshes would take their toll. I like Golovkins or Glenn Johnsons chances better. Golovkin is more nasty and intelligent on the offence, and Glenn has better defence and is too rugged and tough to quit.

 

Sure would have been nice to see Jones fight a savage puncher in his 'Prime' so we could even know. He didn't do that though. Not at 160, 168, or at 175. Or Heavyweight. Kinda odd if you ask me.

Anyone can see for themselves how easily Jorge cuts of the ring and gets Roy against the ropes, where Roy immediately covers up. Please take into account that Jorges hair blocks his eyesight as he executes this gameplan. What would an A-level pressure fighter then be able to do against Roy, is the question that must be asked :think
