According to reports in Boxrec news Murray will be fighting in the Froch/Groves card the 23rd of November with no opponent yet announced. This makes it highly unlikely that Murray will fight 3G on the Feb 1st, 2014 card. Does this prove that Murray is ducking 3G? Maybe Murray is hoping for another crack at Maravilla (whom he beat handily, IMO). That s if Murray gets past his yet unnamed opponent two weeks from now. If Murray does win convincingly this could also be a setup for a possible bout at 168 against the Froch/Groves winner.

Fight might happen in May. Im seriously thinking HBO wants them on same card but not in vs each other for Feb, so they can tape materiel and highlights, and maybe even some trash talk from each camp to run a "Road to GGG Murray" docutisement this spring to build GGG profile up for PPV promotion for lineal next fall.

From the sporting/hardcore fan perspective, theres no reason not to fight in Feb. But if they have Murray fight then.. thats leaves GGG with no top 5 opp leading into lineal shot. "Road to GGG - Mora" just doesnt have the same appeal. (esp with no buildup)

I think what we seeing here is just part of the chess game between (HBO exec) Hershman and (SHO exec) Espinoza.

How many recognised belts were there in haglers day though? That's a genuine question because I'm guessing it wasn't 4, it's having a belt which gives you earning power and in reality there are far easier options to win a middleweight belt than taking on golovkin.

Macklin was top 5 and Stevens was top 10. [Ring mag]

When was the last time promoters admitted they wouldn't put their world class fighter up against another one? :conf

Hearn: "He's extremely heavy handed, that's not a fight we want for Darren."
DiBella: "He's an animal, there's no way in hell I'm having Sergio fight him in his comeback fight"

I kind of agree with your rationale in first two paras, but what's this about Espinoza/SHO being involved in all of this?!? SHO's got jack **** on HBO as far as 160 is concerned. Espinoza is probably hoping Jacobs can beat Quillin and make 154 afterwards.

You just stumbled on it yourself. SHO has jack at 160, which means they MUST snag the WBC/lineal before HBO if they want to not concede that market for the foreseeable future else Quillin remains a paper champ with no comp under SHO umbrella. Thats why they trying to pay Cotto so much for Alvarez. To sink Martinez fight and have Rubio owe them a favor and have a shot at belt. Martinez has 2 HBO fights left, SHO knows that HBO will make sure the last one is with GGG if humanly possible. But hes shaky and might lose to Rubio.

Cotto is HBO-friendly as well even if not locked in. So HBO would have at least even playing field.

In any case, HBO is going to have to spend probably 8 figures to secure GGG fight for lineal. Which means that they have to build GGG into a PPV draw ASAP, else they going to lose their shirt bidding for it - especially if they have to draw Rubio away from Haymons deep pocket and GGG will be the only PPV draw. Even Martinez will want huge numbers to fight GGG at 40 yrs of age.

But HBO absolutely cannot lose the WBC and lineal to SHO, because they know Haymon will never let Quillin step in with GGG (unless he ditches HBO for SHO) but the lineal will give them all they need to make the big promotions at 160 and HBO will start losing MW fighters to SHO.

There were 3 belts. Marvin picked up 2 from Minter, and the 3rd he picked up at the tail end of his career from Mugabi

The people on here who claim the Golovkin hype is out of control : I agree, but when you have:

    Martinez' promoter (Dibella)
    Quillin
    Barker
    Murray
    Sturm
    Geale

all shiitting their pants at the prospect of fighting the guy, it's not hard to see where the hype comes from.

Your entire theory revolves around Rubio being so grateful that he gets his shot against Martinez if they steal Cotto away that he'll want to go over to Showtime and win the Martinez fight all of which seems ridiculous.

    1) He's mandatory so he'll get his shot against Martinez or get a vacant title shot when Sergio is stripped for not facing him.

    2) He isn't beating Sergio.

    3) Even if all that happened i don't see any reason Rubio would be so grateful he would feel the need to owe Showtime. Also HBO has had Rubio fight on there for years if he has a sense of loyalty to anyone it would be them.

I don't agree with any of it.

Agree with this, the middleweight division is stacked with puss.sies such as Murray, Barker, Geale & Sturm.

Yeah, I'd imagine Rubio would be offered more money to fight Golovkin on HBO than anything Showtime would offer in two fights. GB's already pitting Quillin-Jacobs together for their Superbowl special, effectively hampering the progress of the loser. I don't have the sense their overly interested in investing at MW.
