It is basically set for May 9th on HBO. To be aired after the long awaited Pac/FMJ fignt/replay. Assuming this is still the case, who will it be? Better question, who will be available? I guess we could hold our collective breaths for Cotto but if that miraculously happens it would get pushed back to early June because Cotto likes fighting on the weekend of the PR day parade in NYC. There really is nobody of consequence at MW available. May 9 will NOT be an HBO PPV date so no Chavez Jr and Froch will also be tough to make. So once again GGG will have major difficulty getting an acceptable opponent in the ring with him. The whole dirty, disgusting sport is doing an end run around him?
1 - Cotto 2 - Quillan/Lee winner 3 - Lem/Ndam winner (at 3 because wouldn't mind winner continuing their momentum for one fight more before unification) Im not listing Froch or Chavez because I want G to stay at middleweight. Moving up will be the beginning of the end for him and to me would be chasing money over legacy. At middleweight he can really be special and maybe even make a run at Hopkins defense record. Would like to see him try.
I would hate to see him go out like that! I'm sure he can make just as much money blasting a club fighter in Argentina! I hope he goes that route. Maravilla was amazing, but his time is up. :/
Some fighters are good in one division but once they move up that magic disappears, I hope that's not the case with Golovkin.
I like both guys but do not like that fight. Shot Sergio has no business in the ring with GGG at this point. Cotto should just man up, or vacate already so WBC can order a mandatory fight for full title. Golovkin could then just fight whomever the WBC named.
Would they actually do this? I wonder if Sergio would even be ready by May 9th? Taking Cotto off the table, I just cannot come up with any names of consequence that would be ready by May 9th. Possibly Soliman or even Toreando Johnson. I will have to look down the rankings but everyone is spoken for or has already lost to GGG.
Abel Sanchez and others claim GGG fights better against 168-75 lbers in the gym. I did consider the comments source but it would hardly shock me if true.
I think the most realistic fight would be against Willie Munroe Jr, coming off a the Boxcino tournament and a semi credible win over Brian Vera. Quillin, Lee, Lemieux, Saunders, N'dam are all in action and the Cotto fight would not happen on May 9th.
I hope not. Monroe Jr is nowhere near ready for GGG. He is improving, but that would be a mismatch not fit for premium cable in my view. Give Monroe another year and 3-4 more fights against progressively better guys, then we will be able to tell if he should be in the same ring with Golovkin. I like Monroe and dont want to see him destroyed right when he is starting to step up his game and career and get some traction.
