***PLEASE DON'T TURN THIS INTO A THREAD SAYING GOLOVKIN WILL KO HAGLER OR THAT HE IS JUST A BUM. PLEASE DO NOT TURN THIS INTO MORE BORING NONSENSE ABOUT LARA, CANELO OR WARD*** Looking through a few threads recently and someone pointed out that not that many of Golovkin's KO's have come through one punch hits. His most recent ones have been ref stoppages or the fighter has just flat out quit, whilst being conscious. What's your take on that? I've always been of the opinion he is quite heavy handed but that his power isn't 'freakish'. He doesn't wind up punches like some fighters do and I don't think he is always looking for the KO punch. More to the point, it's not that often he catches an opponent flush on the chin with a big shot without them crumbling; they're usually covering up or trying to stay out of range. Further to that, I think that whilst he doesn't land clean on the chin a lot, he tends to land clean somewhere; it's rare to see him land without some sort of reaction from the other guy. To me his KO rate comes more from his boxing ability of being able to land solid shots elsewhere and do damage (most notably that left hook to the body). What do you guys think?
It's not freakish in the way that say Jackson's power is but it's still very impressive. I'm sure if he loaded up on his shots like so many other KO artists he'd score a lot more 1 punch knockouts but he loads up so little yet his punches carry still so much heft.
Well, if he lands on you right then yes he will have you crumbling Ishida (one punch KO), Lemieux (decapitating body shot), Macklin (decapitating body shot), and just go on forever Lol. Curtis was more of a beat down that you are describing to, though he was flattened by a double left hook in the rd 2. Plus, GGG said he didn't want to knock him out but punish him for 12 rounds. Whether you believe him or not, that's up to you. For me, the most extraordinary thing about his power is he knocks out people who've never been knocked out before but who've faced huge punchers like Darnell Boone. The second thing, and even more so, is the fact he doesn't even look like he's trying.... Like you said, most fighters wind up. Like Lemieux, he puts a ton of torque into his punches and he is a huge puncher; however, Golovkin looks like he's just tapping his opponent with barely any effort and suddenly they'll go down whether it's to the head or body.
I mostly agree. While he's no Julian Jackson, he's great at putting his punches together finding the cleanest spot to land. His punching technique and accuracy is probably the most important attribute in his game and #1 among the active fighters.
Mehdi Bouadla has fought both Golovkin, Kessler and many others. In an interview not long ago, Mehdi said Kessler was without a doubt the hardest hitter he ever fought. (Didn't mention who was second...)
Golovkin never (or almost never) puts his whole weight into punches which is why he never loses balance like Kovalev. It would have to be a life and death fight against somebody bigger to see Golovkin fully commit to some of his punches.
I doubt. He will be as careful with Lee, as he was with Lemieux. He needs the belt, so he will make sure he gets it.
so, why didn't/don't Sturm, Martinez, Barker, Quillin, Chavez Jr, Froch, Canelo, N'Dam, Jacobs, Lee, Saunders and the rest of the top 155-168 lbs heap want to fight him?
My view on GGG,s power is that its deceivingly powerful, opponents have wilted before Golovkin has landed something of real looking menace. Throws everybodys game plan right out the window and then thats pretty much that.
Quillin also got caught in spite of being careful. So was Korobov. Golovkin will try to exclude that chance even if it is minor, as the cost would be undisputed championship.
Kovalev hits harder, but GGG hits plenty hard enough, and it depends on the situation, if he's fighting defensively and his gameplan is centered around his jab primarily, he KO's you with accumulation, If he goes in on a seek and destroy mission, you have no chance.
There have been a couple fighters that said he doesn't hit as hard as they thought, so to me, it can only mean they had unrealistic ideas as to how hard he hits. Obviously since he has stopped nearly everyone he faced, the dude has power. He hits hard...end of story. Hardest puncher ever? No, but just having a hard punch doesn't win you fights. His power is enough that it takes the other guy out of his gameplan, similar to how elite speed and movement do to some fighters.
