Golovkin's style wouldn't work at 168 at all

He's a freakish MW with a fantastic chin and good physique but you gotta wonder whether his defense is even remotely on the level of his other skill departments. Is he tanking punches with his face because he can't be bothered to raise his hands against B level opposition on a weight class that comes easy to him or is it lack of actual skill?
I mean, it's fascinating to see a boxer simply walk through punches but would that ever work against hard hitting Andre Dirrel or Carl Froch? Hell, even James DeGale has been looking really sharp lately - I don't think Golovkin could afford repeating tonight's fight style against him at all. Or against Ward, or Stieglitz or any top 10 SMW for that matter.

Realistically, Golovkin is moving towards his mid 30s so it's safe to say that he's probably not getting any better at this point. I wonder whether he'll consider moving up. I'm not sure if I'd recommend it. In fact, I don't think he's quite the fighter Martinez was roughly 5 years ago. To me it seems that Golovkin is a freak of nature being physically too strong for MW and possessing good offense. However, His defense seems lacklustre and I can't see boxer whose punches he'll definitely not just walk off, not exploit the fact that he's easy to hit.

Not a single top SMW has bad defence.

    1. GGG has a good chin

    2. It seems to me that GGG doesn't try to hard with defense because he doesn't have to. If you don't have to worry about getting KO'd or losing, you may as well make it an entertaining fight.

    3. Froch has a sh!t defense and has been highly successful at 168.

At 168 GGG would (unsurprisingly) be less dominant but would still give anyone a hard fight. Ward is the man in that division and I think GGG would give him a harder fight than anyone else has in his career so far.

GGG would still be a gun at 168.

Abraham's defence ain't bad though. :huh He also lost every single S6 fight after Taylor. I'm talking Froch, Dirrell, Ward, DeGale, Kessler level. I can't see Golovkin beating these guys at all. Having **** defense against either of these guys is a guaranteed loss. Good luck ignoring Froch or Dirrell punching you for free all night.

I think he'd be competitive with the second tier of SMW like Abraham, Stieglitz, Bika, Anthony Dirrell and so forth winning some and losing some.

How does Froch have bad defense? That's is not true at all!?

There is no evidence whatsoever that Golovkin would give Ward a better fight than proven SMWs Froch and Kessler. Don't make me laugh. Murray managed to connect with Golovkin's chin quite a bit - how are highly skilled SMWs ever gonna miss?

I don't think he lacks defensive skill sometimes he does seem to neglect it a little bit but overall it's not as bad you make out here.

Golovkin and Dirrell went 1-1 in the amateurs. I also think Dirrell's style transitions better into pro boxing. Also, in that fight Golovkin won he didn't get close to "destroying" Dirrell.

2010 Dirrell (from the Froch or Abraham fight) would put a clinic on Golovkin.

Why don't you mention the many, many times that Golovkin made Murray miss? There were numerous times when Golovkin made Murray miss combinations in the pocket - enough to make a defensive highlight for this fight. How does someone with "bad defense" do that? Golovkin spends 10+ rounds going forward and barely has a mark on his face - how is that possible if he has bad defense? His face isn't made of adamantium, as far as I know.

His defense is fantastic, at the end, Murray had no power so GGG was sticking his nose in his face and letting him pull the trigger enough to give him an opening for a knock out shot.

If he wanted to play slick with Murray he could have, but he wanted to knock him out and Murray was in a shell. The only carrot Murray was going to take was a shot he knew he could land.

If GGG has a poor defense then so does Froch.

There's plenty of evidence, just watch them fight.

Yes top MW's will land on GGG but fighters rarely land big shots flush on GGG, that's the thing. Also with GGG it's not just about landing on him, it's also about avoiding his hurtful punches. Many great fighters have been hittable but still won a lot of fights and been extremely successful.

Hes the epitome of a career middleweight, and that's where he should stay.
