What a fight. WHAT A FIGHT. I remember watching this back in 2004 by myself in my sitting room screaming for Gomez. The atmosphere was electric, Ian Darke and Glenn McCrory were awesome. Everyone thought it was going to be a win for Arthur and he was a big favourite. Looking at the fight in hindsight,I believe Gomez was a better fighter than Arthur and that Arthur would always have been stopped by him. Gomez had the key... LEFT HOOKS. It was a great fight. It's a shame Alex never really improved from that - he just marked time against a series of limited opponents and then lost to one.
Arthur had an excellent second round. I think the fact that the fight was at home, in front of a raucous crowd, really worked against him because he was easily drawn in to a war with Gomez. The left hooks were landing for Gomez in the first round but in the second round Arthur controlled the action. In the third round Arthur was drawn in and got caught with a massive left hook against the ropes that took a lot out of him and led to him being pummelled for the rest of the round. That first left hook on the ropes was the punch that changed the fight. Could Arthur have outboxed Gomez and won the fight if it had been in a neutral venue, less of a raucous atmosphere? or does gomez just bring too much intensity for him? its an interesting discussion
Was some atmosphere and a quality fight, gomez was a 5/1 shot, bet a few mancs had some money on that.
Absolutely immense fight, one of my favourite fights ever. Was cheering Gomez on but to be honest it got a bit sickening, Arthur showed a huge lack of intelligence shipping THAT many left hands in 5 rounds.
Shame Alex never really progressed as everyone expected, was being touted as the second coming of Ken Buchannan at one time in Scotland. As for Gomez he was a fantastic personality for British boxing, had a good back story and gave his all every time he laced em up
I watched it the other day coming to think about it , brilliant .Arthur needed to work more in close . He had no answer to Gomez when he got close .Some nice work on the outside though from Arthur ( jab ) and some good body shots .Gomez was like a min Tyson .
