Has anyone seen thsi fight? Did humberto deserve to dethrone little hands of stone? I've looked but I can't find any footage of the fight. I'm also struggling to find any write ups of the fight. Anyone have any info on this?
all I've been able to find is this footage but I can't read mexican so I'm not sure where it's from. it had carbajal and gonzalez in the text though. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=irlUzMOsZsA[/ame]
Classic and rare example of a slugger outboxing a boxer I hear. Forgot if the fight was close so I will rewatch within time but I can't find it either. 1 & 3 are up with 1 being one of the best action/technical fights. Weird that 2 isn't up. Edit: Nah that footage isn't it. Here's a write up on the third fight though by SI. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/article/magazine/MAG1005980/index.htm second fight i couldn't find an article
I saw all three fights. Last two were not even remotely like the first. First fight was great because they really went at it. Next two are memorable not because they were particularly entertaining but because Gonzalez demonstrated his ability to adapt and learn from the prior fight and use a completely different style to win. Instead of trying to punch with Carbajal or even hurt him, he fought as a cautious boxer. He outboxed Carbajal both times, and Michael seemed somewhat out of it/disinterested/did not know what to do in response. I gave Carbajal a pass on the second fight, thinking he was just surprised at the style change and had come in overconfident that he would expose that china chin/heart that he thought Gonzalez had. But when Carbajal fought the same way the third fight, I thought either he is an idiot, or just didn't care/was unmotivated, or just unable to cut off a boxer, or on drugs or something. I think I have both on vhs, but not sure of the quality. Probably so-so.
I'm watching the third now as we speak :good The second fight was massive though, carbajal got paid a million for it, the ring will have definitely wrote an article on it but I didn't collect the mag back then!
I was at the 2nd fight, I saw it live. I thought Gonzalez won, though the cut worried me (I believe it was ruled due to a butt). For what it is worth, these were/are my thoughts regarding that fight. I thought that Gonzalez would win the first fight, but he got cut, then tired and got caught. Leading up to that fight, he had abandoned his box first, slug later style and just been punching. Also, Nacho Beristain had not been preparing him for his fights. When I read that he had re-united with Beristain, I thought he had a great chance to win the rematch. Gonzalez fought 3 tune-ups for the fight, going 10 rounds each time, with the goal of throwing more punches in the 10th round than in the first. When I learned that I was pretty certain that he would win and got 3-1 odds in Las Vegas. I thought that he would box early, using his southpaw style to pick his spots and wear Carbajal down, then stop him late. I was suprised when he boxed his way through the fight, and I nearly had a stroke when, about the 6 or 7th round, I saw his face covered in blood. He finished well and won clearly, though many in the crowd had wanted a more action-packed fight.
I got all three fights on dvd. In the second fight the slugger turned boxer and outboxed Carbajal. Very impressive display from Gonzalez, who won despite a badly cut eye. Woller
