I agree Gonzalez should have gotten the nod. I'm saying what if more talented and skilled guys like Cuadras, Estrada, or Inoue were across the ring from Gonzalez that night, with those judges.

Since he fought Villanueva last, I just assumed he'd moved back down, whoops, I guess not. No Villanueva moved up, like a year ago. Oh well, I can't be up on everything.

But I don't think they'd be foolish enough to engage him at close quarters trying to overwhelm him with volume. That was just the only strategy open to Rungvisai who is more limited than they are. Although Cuadras did try a similar plan with more success. He fired almost as many punches at Gonzalez as Rungvisai but stayed more elusive and mobile. Cuadras made himself less of a target and didn't have to absorb about 120 of the punches Rungvisai did. He got Gonzalez' connect rate down 11 percent from what happened to Rungvisai. In their fight Cuadras and Gonzalez actually have similar connect rates, but Gonzalez threw a hundred more punches and managed to outland Cuardras by 65 punches. Gonzalez is the king of volume. He was throwing like 90 punches a round against Rungvisai. I don't think volume is the way to beat him.

I think to beat Gonzalez clean, either Estrada would have to pot shot and snipe him from the outside, or Inoue would have to muscle him and break him down with raw power.

Gonzalez dodged and blocked almost 700 punches showing great defense while landing almost 500 punches showing great offense. Don't think Whitaker, think Chavez. Gonzalez is a great pressure fighter.

We've known for a while Gonzalez and Rungvisai are supposed to rematch and they're both keen for it, but it doesn't seem like Cuadras-Estrada will be as easy to make. The news is they have till June 8th to negotiate, but the quotes from Cuadras and Estrada make it sound like their negotiations aren't going too smoothly. Dan confirmed Inoue was likely going to be on the same card as Gonzalez-Rungvisai, but we only have one tweet saying anything about the three fights on a card. I won't get my hopes up yet.

Amazing... finally HBO might be getting its head screwed on straight after all these years.

This seems far too good to be true. It'd be amazing if it happens.

He took an enormous amount of punishment. Did you even see the fight? Just look at his face.

You sure this is on HBO? I know that Gonzalez has been on two or three of Golovkin's HBO undercards before, but this ain't that. The fight is scheduled weeks later after Canelo/GGG. And I know that HBO has been romancing Inoue trying to bring him to the states for a big Gonzalez fight, but when was the last time HBO let flyweights headline a card? They are being really stingy with their cards anyway lately. This seems like a real weird move to have a whole night of flys and Gonzalez is the headliner even though he's never headlined before. All the other guys don't have big names in the US and haven't even been on HBO before so what kinds of ratings is this going to get domestically? This kind of move feels more like Showtime or Roc Nation sticking their hand in. Like remember when Gonzalez and Estrada fought in 2012 on the undercard of Viloria vs Marquez? That was Wealth TV who organized that. It's not out of the realm of possibility that BEIN Sports or Box Azteca might be putting this together either.

He absorbed over 200 shots. That is true. But he landed over 400. His face isn't the best indicator though. I think most people were looking at the cut which was caused by Rungvisai's headbutts, not by punches, and were scoring blood not damage. The headbutts were most obvious in rounds 3,4, and 6 where Rungvisai got deducted a point. Rungvisai likes to use his head in there. In his previous fight against Cuadras where he lost the title, he gave Cuadras bad enough cuts that they had to stop the fight. Cuadras' face was bleeding pretty bad but he was tuning Rungvisai up that fight too.

You know, it's interesting, I was looking for a Chavez Sr fight to compare this fight to and about the only one I could find compubox figures for was the Meldrick Taylor fight which are almost the reverse of Gonzalez/Rungvisai. Taylor had landed 457 punches out of 1,176 to Chavez' 258 of 701. Entering the final round the scores were 107-102 Taylor, 108-101 Taylor, and 105-104 Chavez. Taylor had such a massive lead that the only way he could lose was by knockout. Of course, in this case, Gonzalez wasn't knocked out. He landed 441/1,013 to 284/940 and the scores read 114-112 twice for Rungvisai and 113-113.

Gannicus said something in another thread that made me think of this one:
That's what Gonzalez did. He outfought the guy staying in the pocket without running or holding. It takes skill to do that, more skill than what Mayweather did. I saw mastery and elite technique in the ring that fight.

No arguing about skill and talent showed that night, but that was a war. And Gonzales showed plenty of weaknesses, which the Thai fighter exploited to his fullest advantage.
