The Black Lights is a cracking behind the scenes look at the boxing world of politics and deal making
I was too cold after football to even bother to do anything but have a large cup of tea and a bath... (at least we won I supose...) Anyway, a book I enjoyed was Leo N. Miletich's 'Dan Stuart's Fistic Carnival' which is about the James Corbett vs Bob Fitzsimmons fight. A couple of boxing books that fly under the radar that should be stock reading The Big If - Johnny Owen Story Benny - The Benny Lynch Story Both are social commentries as well as boxing stories.
Excellent book, especially if you followed Laing's career at the time but don't hang around getting it. I spoke to the author a few months ago and he was down to his last 60 copies.
:good But, it's still a good book so don't be put off... I'm not sure how many are left though because the author used to sell them on ebay and none are listed.
got falling hard great book cracking read, bennys boys was good to:good tent boxing is not bad either
the brailsford book is an excellent read.as i mentioned a few pages back, the tom spring and tom cribb biographies are great but a good start to get an overview is bare fists by bob mee
the tom spring book is great.the jack johnson book is very interesting and throws up some characters.just finished that social history of bareknuckles and it is very informative about the era.jem mace book is superb.you really deel like you are there for the ride.haven't read the life of bendigo, must get that one
Any of Adam Pollocks books on the early Heavyweight champions are highly recommended, sadly very expensive though. The Fitzsimmons one is the cheapest and comes very highly recommended from me.
