Big Midland southpaw Rob Norton defends his Commonwealth cruiserweight title against Nigerian threat Akinyemi AK 47 Laleye in a good-looking showdown on the Matthew Hatton-Lovemore Ndou event at Stoke this Friday. Norton, who also holds the British cruiserweight title, won the title with a unanimous but bruising 12-round over Sunderland ex-amateur star David Dolan last time out in February and looks as good as ever at 37, a pro since 1993. The Stourbridge man has never been overused, with 36 outings behind him, and is enjoying a nice little Indian Summer to his career. He won the British title with a one-sided decision over Londoner Micky Steeds late last year. To the menacing Laleye, a 28-year-old from Lagos who boxes out of the United States and did extremely well in the fourth series of Contender earlier this year in Singapore, winning two fights and making it to a battle for third place in the series, where he was outscored by Detroit puncher and former world title challenger Rico Hoye over eight rounds. Slick Canadian southpaw, Troy Ross, won the event overall, outscoring Laleye over five rounds in the semi-finals. Oh yes, Laleye made his mark all right, and this is a fine match by promoter Ricky Hatton, one that could go either way. On his own Midlands turf, however, the more experienced Norton should have enough to get home on points.
An interesting fight and very decent main support. It's nice to see a decent foreign opponent for the Commonwealth for once well done Ricky :good
Some great fights on this bill, Matthews/Lawton looking forward to most I'd say, Butler/McDermott, Renda/Samuels etc, good undercard.
This isn't a bad main event this. Hatton vs N'Dou on the undercard is great too. Well done, Wicky :good
atsch perosnally i think norton is a bit chinny, not glass jawed to speak but he reacts to punches...maybe more due to his guard effectively blocking his trunks from taking damage as possible. i think lalaye could steamroll over him. BUT great fight. live fighters who have done the knowledge. heard he is pretty good at long range.....hang man the noose please
May I just add, a big good luck to my boy Danny Butler. We used to be in the same tutorial class in secondary school. Been following his career for the last 3 years. Still see him jogging around the streets. True Brizz lad.
Ah, that's how he's got a 5 round decision on his record! I was wondering what the **** was happening!
