Most of the time the win is discredited because one of the fighters may have been past prime, but not always. Sometimes people will say things like one guy was weight drained or didn't train properly, etc. What are some fights you consider good wins but are often discredited for some reason?

Some that came to my mind are-

Louis KO4 Baer... I've heard people say that Baer was past prime or didn't take the fight seriously or whatever. I think this was a very good win for a pre-champ Louis. Louis beat the hell out of Baer who had lost the HW Title about 3 1/2 months prior to Jimmy Braddock. Louis was the first to stop Baer. Baer was only stopped 3 times in 81 fights (once by Louis and twice by Lou Nova).

18 out of 20 experts polled by The Ring picked Oscar to beat Pacquiao.

Now I'd say 99% of us don't rate that win as meaning much. I cannot think of a better example of this, the turnaround has been complete.

This thread could honestly go on forever. There's so many examples.

    Michael Spinks vs Gerry Cooney

Yes, Cooney was inactive, probably in a bit of a mess outside of the ring, but had destroyed his previous opponents in typical Cooney fashion, and dwarfed Michael Spinks, who was perceived as being nothing but a blown up Light Heavyweight. Spinks didn't just win, he destroyed Cooney. A good win, noteworthy.

Douglas KO10 Tyson and Holyfield KO11 Tyson

Douglas and Holyfield fought very well vs. Tyson and should get credit for doing so. All you usually here are excuses for Mike Tyson.

Often wondered about that myself, P.

Think the same thing holds true before Toney fought Holyfield.

Holyfield W12 Foreman. It was a very good fight and Foreman was awesome that night... but Holyfield was better. Foreman was bigger and stronger than ever even though he had a little less snap on his punches than in the '70's. He was just a tad slower in 1991 but he had good stamina, an excellent jab, one of the best chins ever... and he now paced himself very well. He was a much smarter fighter than the one who lost to Ali. Give Holyfield the credit he is due.

Carlos Monzon-Jose Napoles. This bout is ofter derided by today's "experts" in 20/20 hindsight as a case of Monzon being too big for Napoles...for brevity's sake, I'll only say that back then..at the time of the fight, that sure as hell wasn't the opinion of the boxing world...to them, Napoles was the guy to whip Monzon.

Saddler managing to tommy-top Pep over the course of their series. Regardless of how much better Pep might have done at his best, how dirty Saddler was and so on and so forth, I still think Saddler deserves no small amount of praise.

It often seems to occur that a fighter ends up being denied credit for defeating a long-standing champion when said champion is past his best but still a good fighter. Especially when most people think that the victor wouldn't have been near as likely to do the same in the old champion's prime. For example, I'm not Hatton's biggest fan, but his win over Tszyu often comes under unfair scrutiny at times, as does McGuigan's win over Pedroza.

    Addie's right, there are tonnes......

    Manny Pacquiao

    vs..

Marco Antonio Barrera - shot and passed prime
EriK Morales II - shot and passed prime
    Juan Manuel Marquez - robbery
Oscar De La Hoya - weight drained, past prime and shot. Quit himself, wasnt made to
Miguel Cotto - rendered paraplegic by Margarito
Ricky Hatton - rendered paraplegic by Mayweather Jr

All but Hatton needed a poo also

How can you say the Tyson of 1996 was prime Tyson??! :huh

Anyone with eyes could see he was not the same fighter he was in 1987. I doubt even Evander Holyfield himself would try to make that claim, it's so patently untrue.

Douglas beat the better version of the man.
