For the second time Goosen has managed to **** up a possible Pavlik/Williams fight with his ridiculous monetary demands. Last year Goosen screwed things up by accepting an offer of $1.25 million, and then after Arum told HBO it was a done deal, Gossen came back and demanded $1.4 million. HBO and Bob Arum told him to **** off. The news just came out that two weeks ago he screwed things up again by demanding a 50/50 split. I like Williams, but he is not a big enough draw to demand 50/50 from the middleweight champion of the world, and Goosen knows that. I think the whole Pavlik/Williams, Arum/Goosen situation provides insight into why it's hard for Paul to get fights.
50/50 isn't that crazy. HBO seem to like showing Williams, even if he isn't as well known as KP. 55/45 would be appropriate.
Pavlik is the champion and these fools wanted 50/50. All they had to do was throw Pavlik a decent offer and they would have got the fight but they really want none of Pavlik.
The article makes it sound like Goosen told Arum he would not force Pavlik to take the small end. It sounds like Goosen thought he was being generous. The man is an idiot, or else he saw how well Sauerland/Abraham did by talking **** with no intentions of fighting, and wants to give it a try himself. Go read the article, and then tell me what you think went on.
Pavlik has no options. Pavlik should take 50/50 and fight the smaller Williams. Williams has more options since he can maybe make 147 and he can make 154 easily. Williams is also top10 p4p while Pavlik is not and Williams is riding a hot streak while Pavlik's popularity is sinking faster than the titanic.
Williams and his team should accept 40/60. They are challenging the champion, Kelly Pavlik is a bigger draw and it'd make good money despite the 10% loss. Now he's going to fight Dzinziruk and lose:yep
I have mixed feelings about a Pavlik/Williams fight. I like Paul, and do not think it would be in his best interest to fight Kelly without spending more time at 160. Pavlik and Winky have unfinished business. Let KP fight Wink, and send Williams to Germany to kick Sturms raggedy ass. Make KP/PW sometime after that.
Cant really blame Joe Goosen, Pavlik is a big middleweight who has exellent boxing basics and who has a big punch.......Williams had, been seeking fights against Welters, and certainly a terrific showing against Winky who is old and had been inactive, is certainly not going to convince me that Williams can hang with a big punching middleweight...... .....certainly Goosen must be having second thoughts to go up against a dangerous fighter like Pavlik......thinking whats the upside if we win????? .....and if we lose, we lost to a fighter who got schooled by an ancient Bernard Hopkins. A loss which is a real possibility sets Williams back significantly.
Styles make fights, and there is no upside if Pavlik beats Winky....... ......and Winky is a bad style matchup for Pavlik......Pavlik is a predictable fighter much like Felix Trinidad, and we saw what Winky did with that type of style...... If I'm Pavlik, I'd certainly would'nt be fighting Winky who is just coming off losing to Williams..... Pavlik has a much better chance to beat Williams because of style issues. Winky plays too much on the defensive, and Pavlik certainly does'nt have the athleticism and repertoire that Williams had to break though that defense.
Who the hell has Pavlik beat beside Taylor? Miranda? Quintana, Wright are clearly better fighters then 1 dimensional Miranda. I have no problem if Pavlik gets the 60 percent of the purse cause he's the champion but he ain't a draw in which proofs on ppv buys vs Taylor rematch and Hopkins that was terrible. Goosen has a point though Pavlik last big fight was getting his ass kick easily by a 43 years old Hopkins while Williams easily beat past his prime but no shot Wright who isn't close of 43 years old so Goosen feels 50/50 is a fair deal.
And I still don't understand why various camps can't agree to a 40/40 split, with the winner taking the other 20%.
Yeah, Goosen's taking the ****. He does sound like he's doing Pavlik a favour by asking for 50/50. Pavlik should just unify and then fight PW after when he's had a little time to move up. Pavlik would just run him over right now. But that fight has to be made at some point, even if KP has to swallow his pride. It's a big career booster, and there'll be a decent pot at least.
Well Goosen is making it sound like Williams is entitled to the bigger draw, but he's being a nice guy and doing Pavlik a favour by giving him an even split.
