"This has to put Williams right up there with the pound-for-pound best today. I mean, he's a welterweight, and there was no ring rust on Winky. Winky looked tremendous and took some great shots, and came back with some of his own." Dan Goosen, April 2009
Winky had rust, but Winky also fought a good fight. Williams even made Winky look like he couldn't reach him. Williams showed a very shifty defense yesterday.
Winky fought pretty well. Maybe a little rust - but really not much at all from what I saw. The fact is that he simply doesn't throw that many punches, and Williams does - so the result wasn't very surprising. He did the standard Winky stuff, and no surprise there. Williams was able to get through and around his great defense, and simply out-worked him - plus was able to avoid many of his shots. I think Winky can still beat many fighters, and he's by no means "shot". He just got beat, that's all.
There was obvious rust in the first two rounds but after those two Winky was fighting his usual fight and was still just getting hammered. Williams didn't even allow him to breath he was just all over him with punches, any opening he saw he took advantage of with combinations. Just way too much delivered from Williams to say anything about Wright and this is a guy who fights at 147, 154 and 160.
Williams did show some nice head movement in that fight. Winky was jabbing at air all night. Something tells me though that a younger fresher Winky would've timed that jab much better. Still PW did what he had to do with the opponent that he was in the ring with.
Winky fought very lively in that fight witch suggests he's not done yet as a fighter, but there was some clear ring rust in there. Williams had showed some very improved head movement in that fight, but I think a lot of those misses had much more to do with Wright's lack of timing. Inactivity will do that to you.
