they wont spend the money necessary to turn paul into a big star.....at best he will just end up like winky wright part 2... maybe mosley if he beats pavlik and clears out 154 & 1 big name at 147

If you tell me Paul has an impressive skill set, I will agree.

If you tell me Pavlik has an impressive skill set, I will agree.

If you tell me they have very different skill sets, I will agree.

If you tell me Paul is much more skilled than Kelly, I will adamantly disagree.

Paul Williams and his promoter are the ones who need to turn him into a star..that's NOT HBO's job. :nono

    Edit: Thought you said Pavlik.

Goosen is responsible for turning Paul into a bigger star.

i dont expect you too... pavlik is your favorite fighter

bhop is more talented than jermain taylor
miguel cotto is more talented than antonio margarito
roy jones is more talented than antonio tarver
joshua clottey is more talented then miguel cotto

etc etc... i could go on for a while

my point is nobody is going to spend real money on paul williams to promote him properly to get him to the next level.... he doesnt have enough appeal... the only way he can do it is the old school way which is just beating everyones ass

    read up

Actually I think he DOES have some marketability, especially to sponsors looking for a clean cut down to earth African American athlete who can be a role model to kids. Paul doesn't get into a lot of **** outside of the ring, is relatively humble and backs it up in the ring.

If you're trying to create a bad ass killer dude, Paul certainly isn't your guy...but if you're trying to market a fan friendly fighter who can be used as a pseudo-role model, Paul could work. Just requires a lot of effort and patience that Goosen apparently doesn't have.

Dude...that's his PROMOTERS JOB. And calling out mostly big names or established stars isn't the way to go either.

He was called out by Kirkland....declined saying he wasn't well known enough. Challenged by Allen Green.... got nothing.

WILLIAMS is responsible for making himself a star by having entertaining fights casual flock to.

So true. Sad thing is, that might not be enough to make Williams a star. Excuse me if this sounds racist (not my intention, just an observation), but it seems you need to be a cocky, **** talking thug wannabe or hang out w/ rappers to gain your core following if you are African American. The nice guy routine didn't do **** for Forrest, Mosley, or Taylor despite their success.

since when does the guy you just explained a big seller?

    shane mosley... ring a bell
he's the epitome of what you just explained

your missing my point..... to become a big star your promoter needs to market you...

commercials & appearances... stuff like that.... goosen is not about to spend extra money on paul williams with little guarantee that he will get his money back

    Evander Holyfield?

Well Mike Tyson was very much the same thing I described before he ****ing lost his mind :lol::lol:

And Shane Mosley IS a big star. You need to lower your standards a bit on what a "big star" is. Will Williams ever be a super million buy dude? Probably not. Mosley is one of the rare dudes who can main event a PPV in boxing and guarantee say...300K which is average enough to be considered a big draw. He's also been on one half of the highest rated HBO fight of this year against Antonio Margarito.

If Paul Williams even came close to touching Mosley numbers, he'd be a big star.

yeah but paul williams doesnt knock people the **** out...

if your a black fighter you have to be 1 of 3 things

    - knock people the **** out
    - fight extremely flashy
    - talk a lot of ****

paul williams doesnt really do any of the 3

I am not missing any point. I know all that. Goosen doesn't have to spend all that extra money, he need to get Williams in fights, plain and simple.

Judging from Williams interviews, he's not a great speaker yet, and from his fights, he's NOT a big banger or puncher. He has work to do.

And what do you mean "goosen is not about to spend extra money on paul williams with little guarantee"? That's what promoters do.

These are good points. Williams doesn't fit the "stereotype" (although Joshua Clottey will certainly say Williams talks a lot of ****) you're looking for. That said one thing everyone respects is a winner...and Paul Williams certainly is a winner. His humble, nice guy personality will attract a wide variety of races and his "warrior spirit" will bring in fans as well.

His clean cut image won't hurt him with sponsors either, the ultimate entry way for boxers.

I mean it hasn't hurt Andre Berto.

Sure normally...but what I saw against Urango wasn't very pretty

Williams has the ability to be flashy as well. He was pretty awesome against Verno Phillips and if he sits on his punches like he SHOULD, he can be a big puncher (Carlos Quintana and Kolle).
