Nothing overrated in my opinion about this clip, and of course his stuff comes from HBO, where else should he get high def material like that? Ya, some of his stuff falls short of the GP mark, but his best stuff is top notch. love it (besides the outcome of the fight) and one of my favorites [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QPOw16Z1yuE[/ame]
i'm a media student and have been for 5 years. it's easy. I just prefer to get down to business when doing highlights. Show their strengths in detail. Such as. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yOp5ttxStrQ[/ame]
Another video impossible to overrate.... The guy deserves his props for these videos [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SI-z8c3HoQA[/ame]
It's your style to do that. But a lot of people (especially the ones not really that into boxing) sometimes want some background, a build up, or something like a visual storyline in the beginning. Once you get them a bit more interested and paying a bit more attention, the editor hits them with dose upon dose of high octane action on screen, and what you're watching seems to have more value and have more impact, than some random old dudes in short shorts punching each others blocks off.
+1 No substance at all, sadly. When he does show fight sequences he doesn't seem to understand what's "cool" or "interesting" about the action, and his storytelling abilities are reflexively nonexistent. -1 Gotta disagree, b. That seems to be exactly what he doesn't have. Timing. You must be thinking of the stuff Addie just referred to. The clips taken from 24/7 and Facing Ali that were already pre-edited by a professional. When he cuts his own fight footage there are long periods of pointless and meaningless posturing, and the contact itself is rarely the sexiest stuff there. It's sloppy and without life or personality. His transitions and overall presentation is nice though obviously. Barring the silly cheeseball text in his 'Boxing Best Sport' feature.
This is one of his worst videos on a technical aspect. I sort of agree with Addie. I mean I love GP, he's the best boxing editor but that's the main thing... boxing highlight editors are such an untapped thing. The majority of them are garbage so GP stands out. There are mixmakers for NBA/NFL like Domini, Venom, Maxamillion, Rheg, etc that are just out of this world. It's just boxing that's an undone field. And the majority of the editors aren't too good. I know all this stuff because I got into editing at some point in my life. Some of the best boxing videos are made by editors that do all subjects (Film, sports, etc). I could give you an example but that's not the point. GP is great, though. And he does a lot with what he has. A solid editor. His story-telling ability is impressive. I also enjoy his simplicity.
Actually Addie has posted some excellent videos that do exactly that, and they're rich on content as well.
Entitled to your opinion but you are dead wrong regarding his storytelling ability. Just watch his Tyson highlight. That's his strongest ability. I understand how boxing heads may feel that something is lacking or not enough of the actual film is showed... but that just wouldn't be editing. GP has pretty good timing. He has improved this. His audio editing is good, and he doesn't beat-edit repetitively. He's got a pretty good flow most of the time. You're oversimplifying the art and skill of editing. You make points, but you don't understand the technical aspect of it all. That's why GP stands out. You say presentation, but that's the editing you refer to.
I have not seen all of his stuff, so I can't comment on what you said. The vids that he made that were being posted here from time to time were all very entertaining to me and I did like it a lot. It isnt so easy to edit videos, I've tried it before (home made) and without formal training, you really need to have good insticts and tell yourself when it's enough, and when it's not enough. Sometimes it takes 1 extra second cut on screen to make it feel right. You get to keep on re-editing over and over until it feels right.
I was once in the business of style over substance but now I just like to show you a fighter strengths. No gancy editing, no emotional editing, just what they were good at. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IRF_3VeI-LQ[/ame]
Okay, so you know who I'm talking about. While GP may get overrated by boxing fans. He is still pretty good. He doesn't use AE like those guys do, though.
No, Pete. You are dead wrong. A storyteller is telling the story EVERY SECOND in a feature lasting only minutes. If he makes a slow story arc over nine minutes and it was a simple A to B transition that is NOT storytelling, my man. And on the second paragraph... BRO, you need to read Addie's first post again. He's repackaging PRE_EDITED MATERIAL. You sound like you have no clue what you're talking about. But then again you just stated this guy is a good storyteller, so I don't know where you're coming from. :huh I just said the guy is technically proficient. In terms of serving his subject he's mediocre - but then again maybe you can't understand the difference between what he's doing, and what HBO did before he got his hands on it.
Your coming from a boxing purist standpoint. This is little editing. Very simple stuff, and just letting the boxing footage do its stuff. GP is an editor and boxing fan. Their is art to both that he tries to show. Whether it's fighters ability or a to evoke a fighters story and what not. If you think GP is all style than watch Domini. It's ridiculous amazing stuff, though but a lot of flash.
