It was march 1st 2003 when Roy Jones went from superstar to legend becoming the first man in 106 years to win a heavyweight title after holding a middlweight title. But at the post-fight press conference a voice from the shadows was calling Roy Jones out in a kinda like Clubber Lang-Rocky Balboa scene, the man calling Roy out was a former US amateur star, former drug dealer and former Roy Jones teenage foe, lightheavyweight contender Antonio Tarver who was coming off 3 good wins on Reggie Johnson,Eric Harding and Montell Griffin and felt he deserved a shot at superstardom.Of course Roy gave him a shot and we all know what happened in those 3 fights, the culminating point of the trilogy being the second fight when he K Roy TFO in the 2nd round thus making his way to superstardom and history. It was also known as the ''Got any excuses tonight,Roy?'' fight.Apart from his southpaw style and excellent skills in the ring,Antnio Tarver has been known for his flamboyant and cocky attitude outside the ring towards his opponents leading to him being the man everybody loved to hate.Over the years he fought the who is who in the lightheavyweight division but his out of the ring activities and his lack of dedication to the sport made him fall from the mountain top in 2006 when Bernard Hopkins took his title away in a demolishing manner. After a few lackluster performances against questionable opponents he was to fight Clinton Woods in april for Woods's IBF title. Many people were saying Tarver was shot and that Woods will go right threw him but Tarver didn't believe that and pulled out a good performance altough Woods more or less didn't show up.Now on saturday night he is again ruled out by most against the smooth, young, fast southpaw from New Haven,Connecticut Chad Dawson.Does ''The Magic Man'' have a few tricks left at 39 years of age to come out winning or is he here just for a last payday? The answer will be given saturday night in Las Vegas.Anybody have any questions?Wait I have one,''Got any excuses tonight Antonio?''
LOL, for a guy who's signature is the "excuses" tag line from the pre-fight instructions during Jones II, Tarver has made a ****load of excuses himself ever since.
No excuses this time around, Tarver made that clear. He said he was ready and that this will be the performance he wants to be remembered by.
He lost 50 lbs of muscle from shooting Rocky Balboa, that was the thing I believe, just like Roy when he fought Tarver
Probably like 40 lbs of fat and 10 lbs of muscle. Team Hopkins must have put pot brownies in his room service order.
Well he didn't look fat or have any fat when he was in Rocky,so I'm sure it was more than 10 lbs of muscle. And he barely won a SD vs a 59 year old former champ, and it could have gone either way
