OMG!!! I'm 162, and was even fighting a guy much lighter than me (145). I go to throw a punch, he slips, and BURIES it right in to my solar plexus!!! I've been hit real hard before by guys much bigger, but I gotta say this was the hardest punch I have ever taken. For like 5-10 seconds after I felt okay...Until I realized I couldn't breath! I actually had to throw my hands up, and gasp "stop......." with the last bit of oxygen I had left. Not many people go to the body, and I watch boxing, and see that delayed reaction whenever a fighter gets hit in the body. After that you just see them go right down, take a knee, whatever. You always think I CAN TAKE THAT until you just took it :dead

Anyways, I know even working abs, or whatever you cannot build that area (some call it your chi). My martial arts instructor does these breathing exercises where he looks like he's possesed by the devil, and pushes all the air out, tightens his whole body, sounds like he's bringing up every bit of flem from his body. He says it works your chi, but wondering is that how you strengthen it? Other possible ways? Or just basically don't get hit there?
Think I'm about scared to death to get hit there now. That's been about 3 hours ago, and my stomache still aches, and I can't breath very well. I sparred right after that, and noticed my wind was ****.

Some things you can do are:
Medicine ball drops on the abs
    Floorwork
Abdominal vacuums (which is basically what I think your martial arts instructor is doing, strengthening the muscles lying below the superficial six pack)
Exhale sharply as your hit in the body
    Don't get hit there

Try to block it with an elbow. Exhale when you get hit. That's all.

Straight right to the plexus is one of my favorite punches against a southpaw I spar about three times a week.

Lowering your elbows won't do much... bring your elbow inwards actually as it's centered on your frame. Unless you have midget arms, your arms should be long enough in your guard to cover.

Left hook as he does a straight right, or try to time it with an uppercut.

It's not the worst by any means. Liver shots hurt way more.

Is that the spot between your abs and rib cage?

Yeah, it was quite brutal. A lot of the punches in our cottas are punches to the solar plexus, and they just look so lame to me...but knowing what I know now there damn effective! I've been hit in the balls before, and I honestly think this hurt worse.
I'll start trying some of that stuff. I couldn't brace myself for the punch because I didn't even see it. Threw my punch, he came right under my arm, and drilled me. A lot of times he ducks, and kind of freezes, and I mash him for it. So, definitely underestimated him, but never thought I could hurt that bad either.

When boxing, getting hit in the solar was always a good wake up-call, I kind of liked it. I thought blows to the solar could never phase me much.. Then I got hit in the solar by a football helmet coming at full speed... Oh, man.. It was good, but it was bad, know what I mean?.. If I hadn't already been on the john before the game, I probably would've shat myself.

Oh yeah. The type of moment you smirk and say "nice" to cover up the fact that it hurt :hey

Yeah, exactly. But also because in a weird sort of way it actually felt kind of good and you hate his guts but kind of love him too.. Hahaha

Yeah. I caught my sparring partner with a perfect liver punch the other day. It wasn't necessarily hard, but your legs will not work, no matter what you tell them afterwards. That's the kind of thing that ends a fight in one punch there. You feel it for the rest of the day. But being hit in the solar plexus sucks too.
