I have been taking lessons with a trainer who is a good fighter but god awful trainer, I pay 250 per ten lessons and so far Im 3 lessons in, and I dont know anything. i can jab decently, right straight decently, and throw terrible hooks to a heavy bag. Today was sparring day all the guys who are training (all better than me) sparred and it was my turn to spar a guy who has been sparring for 4 months, vs me, a guy who has taken 3 lessons and never sparred before. I get in the ring, the ringer sounds, I start. Im getting a good feeling so far landed a few jabs and blocked like 2 punches, then 12 seconds in round one, bam, he hits me with a right hook. i have no experience in blocking punches yet I had to spar an am fighter today. The right knocked me out, I saw white nothing but white for 2 seconds and woke up on my back. The trainer yells at me to get out and go jumprope in the most humiliating way infront of the whole gym watching the spars. I jumproped for 2 minutes and just left. Might not even go back. Its just like is it me, am I really bad for not knowing how to block punches after my trainer's 2 minute blocking drill out of one lesson out of 3 lessons? should i stop going to this trainer before he gets me hurt? i dont know what to do I just want to quit boxing and find something else. Today was beyond just a little discouraging. Can anyone tell me what i should do.

Get your money back if possible and tell that coach (to be blunt) to go **** himself.

I've found that most coaches know very little about boxing. That's my experience. I basically had to teach myself my own style. Sure, they got me conditioned and training with a group of people will motivate you, but in so far as defense, they don't know **** about boxing.

I think if you posted a video of yourself, people on this forum might be able to help you with your technique.

It could just be a video of you shadow boxing, and punching the heavy bag and double end bag.

It doesn't have to be you sparring, but that would help a lot because you might be looking down or not returning your hands to your face or not ducking or any number of things.

Anyway...don't let it kill your confidence.

    Please consider just this:
    It's not your fault.
    Don't quit!

Honestly, after just 3 lessons, you shouldn't be sparring. That's too soon. You say you don't even know how to throw all the punches?

You should find another gym. Find a gym where the trainers claim to specialize in defense.

He sounds like a nob and if he's going to put you in with guys way out of your league in your first few sessions he's a twat. It's all good showing you what it's really like in a ring but you shouldn't be getting knocked out that's for sure, especially shouldn't put you in without teaching you some defence.

I am really thinking about quitting that gym only problem is there are no other gyms anywhere near me. I have no idea what to do, but I cant even get over what happened today. Im probably gonna have a bad night at work tonight too, I just cant get the humiliating feeling out of my head. I just thought boxing was gonna happen but its making me discouraged like this isnt for me. How did you guys get better, especially defense?

You need to be patient and use it as motivation

Boxing is not for everyone definitely but don't quit. Far as putting new guys with no experience to spar people with experience is not really a problem other fighter should know to pull their punches. Can't blame the coach for it all, would have to be your sparring partner for throwing a hard clean shot. We use to have new guys come in all the time no experience and the coach would have them spar the first day against experienced guys to see where their heart was and what they would do. O btw was free coaching/gym military team so eliminated time being waste on someone not wanting it i guess. Everyone is a street fighter apparently inside.

You've nothing to feel humiliated about, so...

Stop feeling sorry for yourself and get back in the gym.

    This is a lesson...

Thanks for all the feedback, i feel way different now, just slightly unsure whether I have a concussion or not but not feeling upset like I did earlier. Maybe throwing me in with a guy trying to kill me was a lesson, not sure what lesson though because I have zero knowledge on how to counter or even block anything. But im not gonna quit I really want to stay in this I just need to figure out what the method is behind my trainer's madness. or if he is just an awful trainer

Everyone knows how to block punches most inexperienced people just cower behind there hand infront of there face, but blocking non the less.
Did the guy try and hurt you? You didnt see the shot coming did you?

    I ask this because either
    A) you sparred a ***** who likes knocking around new guys. Dw about it every gym has one of those guys
    B) he didnt mean to hurt you and your just "chinny". But look at it this way if you know you can't take a shot you have to focus on defence and the best chin is the one that doesnt get hit

    DON'T QUIT

    Where are you from mate?

You certainly need to find a new trainer. No one should be throwing bombs at you until you are comfortable defending.

Very few people would get back into the ring after getting KO'd this early on. The fact that you are on here asking for advice suggests you don't want to give up.

It's natural to feel the way you do now - most experienced fighters would feel exactly the same. As a complete novice, you must be devastated. If you can muster the courage to get back in the ring - you should be very proud of yourself.

If you can get back in then you certainly have the heart for it - do it !!!

    Good luck.

I got lucky with my trainer. He is nothing great but at least he makes sure that i don't stick my chin out.
Defense is the first thing you should learn. Yeah they say that the best defense is a great offense but come on, you don't go trading punches with someone when you don't even know how taking one feels like.
