And I must say that his age is really starting to show. He certainly was not as accurate as he normally was and took way more shots then usual. It actually looked as if he lost the first 5 rounds. Luckily he figured out Orneales and was then able to dominate him quite easily, However I must say in no way was this the Hopkins that schooled Pavlik a year ago. IMO I think Hopkins should have one more fight and then retire, if not just reire right now. He is 44 and has proved enough to go down as one of the greatest fighters of this time.
Hey, how was the crowd at the stadium? What is capacity and how many attended? As for your analysis, i completely disagree. I thought he looked great. It was a "tune up" fight and Ornelas was the perfect opponent to make Hopkins fight hard to enough where he had to use most of his skills to win. He was breaking Ornelas down from the 6th on. He did a little bit of everything. I do agree that he got hit a bit but that was on the onside, where i'm sure he expected to get hit some to give some.
Damm, that's pretty sad for Hopkins in that he can't even sell out a 10K stadium in his farewell fight in his hometown. How many "legends" had this problem? But hard core fans will always appreciate him.
I had it 2-2 after four and either 6-2 or 5-3 after 8. The only question after that point was whether he'd get the stoppage or not. I think Reg was right, he had to work off some rust early. Ornelas caught him with more than a few nice right hands, he impressed me in there. Bernard's stamina is still a thing of beauty. Didn't look winded in the least after 12 competitive rounds. But... Roy's loss cost him a payday, and it also cost him a high level fight he could look good in. I don't see how he competes at heavyweight with his frame, and I don't see him beating Dawson with the reflexes he has left. I honestly only want to see him in about two or three more fights. Fight Dawson or Haye, maybe fight Toney for the history books, then a farewell fight and start commentating or training.
He was off for over a year. He was rusty. After he shook the rust off he took over and started to look more himself. I think he'll look better in his next outing after taking this tune-up, but I do think he's lost a little step since the Pavlik fight.
There were a couple of empty seats but still a good number of people showed up, Danny Garcia really lit the crowd up. Everyone was really excited to see Bhop wipe the floor with Orneales but people were not as hype when they realized it was going to be a tricky competitive fight, but I still feel like I got my moneys worth and Im glad I got to see Hopkins live.
Just treasure the time you had, mate. I agree with your observations about the great Bernard Hopkins, I could only see a shot version of my favorite fighter live. I'll always be able to say I saw the great Marco Antonio Barrera in action though, and that's good enough for me. All of this talk of Hopkins going to Heavyweight, needs to stop.
Disagree, thought he looked fine. A few less certain moments but as the fight progressed he dominated and won easily. I think you can put a lot down to the inactivity, that can hurt anybody nevermind a 44 yr old. Plus this is not really a fight like Pavlik that would get somebody like Hopkins fired up, it was just a case of doing the job.
This is why he should just fight Jones. Any of the young guys are gonna beat him, maybe not badly, but he won't be particularly competitive with them.
lol So true but i got to give Mayweather credit cause hes really ready to fight Paq Man! We the fans forced him so lets all just pat ourselves on the back
