CAPITAL boxing contender Craig McEwan wants to challenge for the Commonwealth middleweight title next month, writes BRIAN DONALD.

Los Angeles-based McEwan, unbeaten in 18 pro fights in the US, wants to fight Martin Murray for the vacant championship in Bolton on 16 July.

After opening a new gym in Haddington, East Lothian, McEwan said: "Murray is promoted by Ricky Hatton promotions and they didn't seem keen to take the fight but I'm asking my team to pursue this fight further."

McEwan, who trains at Freddie Roach's gym in LA and is managed by Oscar De La Hoya's Golden Boy promotions, added: "I don't mind that Murray would be fighting on virtually his own doorstep – my team and I have analysed his style and I think I can beat him."

Murray is also unbeaten in 18 bouts and McEwan said: "Money talks and an unbeaten Scotsman versus an unbeaten English opponent like Murray would be a big hit with the fans."

McEwan has also appointed Gilmerton welterweight Gary Young as his strength and fitness coach while he remains in Scotland.

McEwan said: "I did fitness routines in Los Angeles under Gary's supervision when he was out in LA so I thought that it would be good preparation for me to work with him on fitness conditioning and strength improvement at my dad's Clovenstone gym."

I thought he didn't want to go down the domestic route?

Would be a decent fight but if he fights Murray and wins then he should go for Barker, Macklin, Lee.

Calling out martin murray and not one of the above mentioned says it all really for the 28 year old.

It's just as well McEwan does this blogging stuff because he won't be garnering much attention for his boxing skills.

Just spoke to him an hour ago, says hes waiting to hear what the Hattons decide.

Murray aint gone past 8 rounds i dont think.

Maybe he justs to restart a bit of recognition over here.

    Two things.

    Firstly is Craig world ranked?

Secondly I like the way he is looking at this. I doubt it's a case of not being ambitious the guy has asked to fight a lot of guys (Mora, Jacobs etc.) and nothing has come of it, he is just looking to get decent fights that can keep him busy this is a realistic option, would be a chance to fight in the UK why not and would be another decent notch on his resume?

I saw on Hatton promotions that Murray is scheduled to fight Peter Mistevski Jr for the vacant title so I'm not too sure if this will happen.

I think coming back here chasing domestic titles would be a backward step for McEwan.

He's made his bed in the States and should lie in it..... sometimes getting wrapped up in the politics and bull**** of the domestic scene can take the eye off the job at hand, IMO.

Hi guys, Craig`s situation is that he`s over here for a few months. He became a father for a second time last week. He noticed that the Martin Murray fight has been TBA for a few weeks and, on checking up, finds he is one of the contenders. He is obviously fit and ready to fight and felt that, as Murray is unbeaten, he would be a good opponent. There would be no point asking for Macklin or Barker for this fight as they have purse bids in to fight each other.
Anyway, Goldenboy got in touch with the Hattons and they have said definitely no. He was simply looking for a bout and Murray seemed like a good option especially as GBP are looking to open up business in Europe.
He still has feelers out for a bout in Britain so hopefully he will get something.
Nothing more sinister than that, guys. You all know that its not the fighters who make the bouts and Craig has never turned one down. Don`t go slagging off Martin Murray either. I`m sure the decision not to fight Craig was not his.

Royal, Mistevski jnr is fighting in Australia at the end of the month so he`s out.
I`m a bit surprised at the negative responses here. Murray is 19 unbeaten, its for a title, its England v Scotland.
Mora`s and Jacobs` people have both knocked Craig back as have many others eg Lara, Angulo etc. Its frustrating for Craig but the big fights will come eventually.

I won`t point out the obvious flaws in your logic there, Ry! But check out Vera v Lee and Vera v McEwan first. Then watch Barker being hit repeatedly and easily by Affif Belghecham and ask if Craig would have let that happen. That leaves Macklin and I predict that will happen before the end of 2011....unless Macklin`s people knock it back.
