On November 19th champion Arsen Goulamirian with defend his WBA Super Cruiserweight strap against Aleksei Egorov. What makes this fight so unusual is that neither fighter has fought in more than two and a half years. I realize there has been some extenuating circumstances but that is ridiculous. How in the world can the WBA still have these guys as their champ and their number 1 contender. Only in boxing!
Because it's the WBA, that's why. Nothing they do has any rhyme or reason, which is why people view them as the joke they are. Nothing about this should surprise us.
You aren't wrong and I should be use to it but every time the WBA does something like this I am still frustrated and incredulous.
You say that as if it means something. All four sanctioning bodies are corrupt money hungry organizations. The WBC and WBA are complete jokes. The WBO and the IBF are ever slightly more respectable, but not by much.
It made them nothing for two years! What I don't get is sanctioning bodies allowing the levels of inactivity and crappy opponents that they do. I assume they make their money on the big fights (since they work on a percentage), so why not push hard on beltholders? It would probably be more attractive to prospects anyway since any young guy is going to think the difference between them and the champ is getting a title shot. If they see that under a certain organization high performers get a shot quickly, they'll flock to it.
It's absolutely ridiculous. That being said, it's a great match up and one which should really gel stylistically and which at least on paper should be a real barnburner
