A couple of weeks ago I mentioned how Jack Johnson would control fighters in clinches by applying pressure to their biceps. Mendoza ridiculed this ,so for his education ,and your delectation . This content is protected
Squeezing the biceps was a tactic that former light-heavy contender Pierre Fourie used quite a bit too.
Sorry, I can't get the video up but its on you tube Lipton talking about sparring with Tiger ,very interesting insights.
i remember reading that len harvey used to squeeze opponents biceps and had a vice-like grip.he used this tactic against his great rival at middle and light heavy ,jock mcavoy the rochdale thunderbolt.
yeah some of the old schoolers did that but it's deplorable, just like rubbing your opponents face/eyes - boxing is not wrestling
I love things like these -- and I disagree about it being deplorable. Some men with a world-title are champions in every sense of the word -- like Arguello -- yet others simply became king-of-the-hill. They came from nothing, warred like inmates, until someone gave them a belt for their efforts, and they'll be damned before they'll let you take it away. Men like Duran -- men like Hopkins. They fight rough, often dirty, they intimidate, and seem all the more insurmountable for it. This is also a side of the square circle, and I'm glad, because there is no better fight then one between two men that give no quarter.
I think of it as a guerilla tactic. but if he does that in a situation that he's able to cope with, thats when it turns dirty...and lazy
You can't compare eye rubbing/gouging to bicep holding. Marciano clouted Walcott as he knelt on the floor. Tyson won his world title with a forearm smash to Berbick's face. Ali retained his by repeatedly grabbing the back of Foreman's neck. Holyfield butted more opponents than a ram. Boxing is professional fighting. Grabbing a bicep is a legitimate tactic to nulify an opponent's range of movement. Ali regularly did it, Jack Johnson regularly did it, SRR regularly did it. They are not wrestlers they are ATG's. :bbb
