Where do you think MMA would be today without the influence of Rorion Gracie and the Gracie family?

I currently train Brazilian Ji Jitsu and at times attend MMA classes and have to say that BJJ is only part of the equation. There are four major disciplines that are crucial to success in the ring they are: BJJ, Wrestling, Kick Boxing, and Boxing.

BJJ is full of moves and counter moves... it provides a fighter with a multitude of submissions. Without it MMA would not be the same. Though I respect Rorion Gracie his style of BJJ is not the most effective. Rolles Gracie Sr. adopted a lot of elements from wrestling and taught them to Rickson and Renzo before he passed away. In fact Rorion left Brazil because he did not want to live in the shadow of Rolles.

Nonetheless, Gracie Jiu Jitsu is still an essential part of MMA and the sport would just not be the same without it.

A good post but I'm not sure that the reason Rorion left Brazil was because of Rolles.
The point to my question was actually regarding the idea for the Ultimate fighting championship that is well documented to have come from Rorion. Although MMA is multi discipline without Gracie Jiu Jitsu it would be like the old days and more of a street fight, that's what people really want to see. It can be very boring watching two guys jostle for the dominant position. The ufc has got boring, like boxing has. People want to see guys punch each other's heads in. Lain and simple.

In regards to your "original question" I must say that Brazilian Jiu JItsu has defined the essence of mma and contributed greatly to its success. Your point is not clear as K-1 and full contact karate draw less revenue and spectators than mma period.

I guess my point is that there are too many rules now. The same with full contact karate and K-1. During the early UFC Fights 1993-1995 especially, it was more brutal, you had guys entering who where just brawlers, that to me has been lost. But then I guess it would not have lasted as long as it has if the rules did not change

The rules were needed to protect the athletes and draw a larger audience....but the Gracies had nothing to do with the rules so I don't get the point of your thread.

So basically what you are saying is that BJJ fuxcked the true essence of UFC which was for two guys going at it hammer and tong without bum fucxking each other :think

think you should ask the question. where would MMA be without catch wrestling. MMA quite literally would have never existed in Japan if it wasnt for the catch "pro wrestlers" who went to Japan and taught japanese pro-wrestlers.
