I'm saying C+. His opponent was even ranked in the top 40, and was very slow-handed and unskilled. Joshua didn't have much variety in his game. I see holes in Joshua defense, he's open to a right hand. He lacked head movement, and should have finished his man sooner. He's nowhere near great, but he's clearly good. A poor man's Wladimir Klitschko is you will.
C He won and that's all that matters really and he won by stoppage and I was completely wrong about Breazeale, I thought he would fold and fold quickly but he showed a lot of heart and courage and took so many flush shots. It was a solid performance, never in doubt, Joshua won every second of it. it wasn't a great fight, it got interesting for me because I was shocked that Breazeale was able to stand upright for that long.
B+ He didn't blow out Breazeale as quickly as some expected and Breazeale did go 2-3 rounds further than I expected but Joshua did prove some things by being taken longer than expected. One his jab seems to have improved, he dominated behind it and was snapping Breazeale's head back time and again with it. He also showed he has learned to be more patient and pace himself. He hurt Breazeale early and was landing hard shots throughout but he never got too reckless like he did with Whyte. So overall a positive performance, the best from him so far.
He had more than Wlad. That's for sure. Wlad would've been holding like a squid after every punch. Joshua was dipping down under shots , stepping off out of range before launching another attack. Pure boxing. Not a single illegal hold in his performance.
He seems to be getting a lot of hate for not stopping his opponent earlier. Lets be honest, at what stage was he ever in trouble? He was in control for the entire fight and bounced his opponent around the ring at times. I thought it was a very good performance against reasonable opposition. Time for a real test though.
IMO this was a B plus performance. in just 2 fights joshua went from a fighter loading up on everything v whyte to a patient /relaxed fighter who boxed within himself and won a fight with ease while taking no real chances or making many mistakes. at 17 fights that was a mature performance. could he have stopped breazele earlier / yes if he went for it and put on sustained pressure but breazeale after being hurt after the uppercut in the second fought with damage limitation in mind . we also learnt AJ has a pole of a jab /and that he can use it to control a fighter and make it hard to be countered effectivley . it was a punch we had not seen previously to any extent at all and it made breazeale have trouble getting off with anything.
you beleive joshua is a hyped up / no power /stiff /robot with a glass jaw who would lose to virtually everyone in the top 10 by ko. no matter what he did you would hate.
You can't base it off expectation just what actually took place. If someone expected Breazeale to win would it mean it should be regarded as an A+ performance?
Ill give this a B. He did what he have to do against a very very limited fringe contender. Considering AJ is quite green himself this was an OK fight for him, but he has to step it up now unless he wants to look like Wilder with his cherry picks.
Anthony Joshua is probably the best heavyweight in the world right now. I thought he looked great. The only thing I didn't like is when he missed with his right hand, he'd sort of laugh, bring it down and wind it back up in position. If he faces a guy with a good left hook, like Wilder, he could get destroyed by the counter hook. But you have to big enough to back out of reach from Joshua's right and then leap in with the left hook as he's bringing his right hand back. Easier said than done. But I think he's great. Joshua and Wilder are like 1a (Joshua) and 1b (Wilder) in the division right now. There isn't much between them. I'd give the advantage to Joshua right now head-to-head simply because Joshua seems sturdier, whereas Wilder is more lean and his balance isn't as good. But Wilder may hit a little harder. I wish them both success and hopefully we'll get a big heavyweight showdown soon. The sport deserves one.
Like others said he won without difficulty Voted B plus Would have went A had he got him out of there in 2 or 3 when he had him
