Because Roy never had any fundamentals to fall back on he relied exclusively on freakish speed and athleticism and when those reflexes declined even in a small percentage then he was always gonna have problems. Fighters like Ali relied on reflexes but also had some fundamentals like a proper jab, rolled with punches, proper positioning and footwork etc Roy never had to learn the fundamentals EVERYTHING was unorthodox and predicated on speed also other fighters you mentioned had a better ratio of athleticism and speed to foundations then Roy, by that i mean Jones was 90% reflexes while those fighters where like 60-40 70-30 so it had less impact on them losing those reflexes. Combine that with the fact guys like Hopkins and Ali had great chins and it was always going to go downhill for someone like Roy in a more dramatic fashion than the likes of Ali or Robinson. Roy Jones was always gonna have a more spectacular peak then people like Hopkins for example, but less sustainability as his attributes leaves him.
I rated it as decent, nothing against you, but i believe a lot of people are now aware of it. But you are right, a solid opinion if I may say.
If all Roy had was athleticism, he woulda been Zab Judah or Naseem Hamed, not one of the greats of the modern era.
Very good and I have said as much myself. His lack of fundamentals and relying on his good given athletic ability was his downfall. As soon as his reflexes slipped a tiny bit he started to get caught by shots he normally would get out of the way of in his prime. Boxing is a cruel sport and RJJ should have retired after he beat Ruiz at HW. With that said RJJ had a high boxing IQ so he had more than just athletic ability. He was a smart fighter in the ring.
I think there's an element of truth in what you're saying. However, the simplest and probably most accurate explanation is that after Tarver II, Roy was a shot fighter. It's happened to plenty of top level fighters - not everyone is a Foreman, Moore or Hopkins. Some just turn to **** overnight. It isn't unique to speed demons like Roy either.
Saying that Roy Jones never had fundamentals is the most ******ed thing ever, its a complete and utter myth. Technically right now..? he is still a better boxer and knows more than 95% boxers out there, fundamentals..? what couldn't Roy Jones do. He could throw every single punch in the book, straight punches, short punches, hooks, overhand rights, he could control distance, he could cut off the ring, he could jab! when he had to! His jab is what won him the John Ruiz fight..? what the **** are people talking about when they say fundamentals. He could throw combinations, he could move and hit, what on earth are people on about..? its something **** fighters and non athletic people say to discredit Roy Jones Junior. He had more skills and technical ability than Hopkins, Mayweather and Toney. None of these guys did the things he done! He was like Michael Jordan with ****ing boxing gloves on. Do you think Mayweather is winning his fights just because of his fundamentals..? 90% of his game is based on his athletic ability, as soon as they begins to erode..? he too will take a beating. Bernard Hopkins another guy who's game is also based on his movement and athletic ability, he's a great athlete! Boxing is a physical sport, what happened to Roy Jones is..? that his body could no longer do what his mind wanted! I don't know why people bang on about mythical fundamentals. Didn't Larry Holmes have great fundamentals..? How come he retired..? Didn't Ronald Winky Wright have great fundamentals..? what happened to him..? There bodies could not do what their mind wanted them to! That is all, that is what happened to Roy Jones Junior. Nothing more nothing less. His body could not co-ordinate as it used to, and his athletic attributes decreased. Boxing is a physical sport, their are millions of boxers out there with great fundamentals. Means **** all, if they have zero athletic ability and i mean zero. There are loads of retired boxers with great fundamentals why are they retired..?????? Because boxing is a physical sport guys. Its not ****ing snooker, its not ****ing golf. I have been using the general forum allot more of late, and honestly i have not seen one! Intelligent poster, i have not read one dynamic thread, just a bunch of ******ed posts.
Really well said. I think people don't realize that you can be unorthodox yet have all the technical skills down pat. Jones was one of the greatest amateurs and professionals ever. That doesn't happen just because you're "fast." His jab against Pazienza was vicious. He used it to control Ruiz. Great combinations to the head and body, a ring general, could fight at any range, great footwork, the list goes on.
"Never had any fundamentals" is a ridiculous over-statement. Yes, he did rely a lot of reflexs and freak ability and athleticism, but lets not go overboard.
I've long said he lacked (or maybe just forgot) some boxing basics that would have allowed him to hang around a little longer, guy had little or no fighting heart, 0 chin and no plan B. As good as he was in his prime those things all eventually came full circle for him.
Exactly, its this myth and nonsense that Roy Jones had no fundamentals is complete bull****. There's allot of great athletes out there but can they fight..? if being fast and athletic is all you need to be..? To become the Middleweight, Super-middle Weight Undisturbed Light Heavyweight and WBA heavyweight Champion, pound for pound number 1 in the world for what.? over 10 years. Then there's allot of guys out there who would dominate but errrrmmmm they don't why..? Because they have no technical ability, and don't have the co-ordination or version/boxing mind of Roy Jones Junior. Before Roy Jones fought Danny Green he stated that... "If you was to check video tapes and compare fighters, people know that i am still pound for pound the best fighter in the world skill for skill".. And if you was to break it down technically he still was, that shot Roy Jones who fought Jeff Lacy was still doing things Mayweather, Ward cannot do, and have never done! He was completely ****ed but still able to show flashes of ability! Nobody esle around today can show! But like i said, his body athletically, strength wise, could not carry out all his minds instructions. But that one fight, its nowhere near prime Jones. Its probably more exciting than all of Floyd Mayweather's fights.
