I voted A+ but really should've voted A because they didn't get the high profile fights until he was slipping.

That's a long running argument though, is that more the fault of Team GGG or unwilling peers?

I'm not looking at fault but rather outcome.

Fair. Grading his collaboration with Sánchez given what they had to work with in terms of competition, though, do you feel it was A+ or could they have improved on that form against that caliber?

Golovkin and Sanchez has done quite well, I have to give him an A+, but lately Oscar has been trying to destroy his career by keeping him inactive as much as possible! I doubt the rematch will happen in May, I really do.................but if it does, Oscar will have three judges, Byrd, Byrd and Byrd, Oscar will own the boxing commission, own the referee and Bob Bennett will be there are there protector and cheerleader as ordered by Oscar, he has to do what Oscar wants.................not to mention the fact that Eastern European fighters are extremely hated in America, at least, by the powers that be in boxing...............

He did as good as he could have until he started getting old. To give him that A+ he would've had to dominate Jacobs and Canelo. It's not like these guys are ATGs. It would've been nice to see him fight those type of guys in 2014/15.

He knocked Jacobs down, staggered him with a left jab, beat him, clearly beat him, no way did Jacobs win that fight...................although he should have gone ahead and knocked Jacobs out, Jacobs ran all night.................El Pollo lost by, at least, 8 rounds to 4, some, such as Paulie gave it to Golovkin 9 rounds to 3, even Nacho Beristain had Golovkin winning that fight, imagine if Golovkin had owned the judges, referee, boxing commission like Oscar did..................Golovkin needs to go all out and knock El Pollo out this time, don't play around, Golovkin needs to fight 3 or 4 times per year to stay sharp, Oscar knows that..................Golovkin should just say no to Oscar and fight Saunders next......................to hell with Oscar! Oscar needs his fishnets for security, so who else would they fight? Saunders dare not fight El Pollo in Vegas, he has to get a knockout to get a draw, Vegas is corrupt!

Well, this was a post I made in 2015, when Abel was still in the corner of Fredrick Lawson.

Does anyone remember "General Okunka", when he was undefeated and generating some word-of-mouth buzz in the fan community? He was the latter-day Margarito, a guy that people said they realistically expected Floyd Mayweather Jr. to either be KTFO by or retire in order to duck. I'm dead serious. That was claimed, by multiple people. :sconf:

In the years since - as Golovkin's star has waxed and then, ever so gradually and subtly, begun to wane - Abel not only hasn't whittled his stable down, he actually has expanded it considerably. There seems to be a focus on the quality of his pupils, though, and not just padding up his roster with quantity like some of his sought-after high-profile coach peers do (not gonna name any names, but y'all know who).

I don't mean quality in terms of just talent, either. I mean coachability.

Lawson didn't listen, so he was booted. His new head trainer is Kwame Asante (best remembered for molding both Joe Agbeko and Joshua Clottey and guiding them as far as their ceilings allowed) - which I won't go as far as to call a major downgrade, but he certainly missed an opportunity to benefit from Sánchez's wisdom and retain access to some absolutely world-class year-round sparring in Big Bear (relative to what is apt to be available in Ghana).

Jayson Vélez was another who never fully "bought in" to Sánchez's program and is currently, I believe, at Wild Card with Freddie Roach.

Sánchez is keeping around those who believe in his success w/ Golovkin and believe that he was a major part of the equation, and want him to do the same for them. Nobody has drunk the Kool-Aid more than Murat Gassiev, and just look at the position he is now in...

Well, I'm a Golovkin fan and I don't find it hard to explain.

    1) Canelo and Jacobs are really good. I think they'd give even great fighters at 160 something to think about. Brook got put in hospital in a thrilling bout where GGG explicitly said he was going to throw the boxing in the dustbin and turn it into a brawl. Is it a surprise that he got tagged a lot?
    2) Golovkin beat (all three, imho) them anyway, and showed that his boxing is fundamentally extremely sound. He's not just some slugger
    3) He's lost a step since his heyday, especially speedwise. He doesn't seem as fluid as he once was. Not a big step, but enough to make him mortal.

Let's bear in mind that up to this point his resume has been mind-blowingly good. Compared to making everybody look like cans, two excellent fighters going the distance is by necessity going to make him look "bad".

At least one more big test coming up, before our focus switches primarily to grading the progressing Sánchez & Gassiev relationship instead.
