Gents, Earl is making his comeback at LightWelterweight at the end of the month. The opponent hasn't been named/found as yet. What are you thoughts? Is he shot? Can he make an impact at LightWelterweight?
I was very disapointed to see him come back after the Khan fight and lose to Henry Castle. I'm now more than disapointed but concerned for him aswell. He was, in my humble opinion, slurring his words in the pre-fight interview of the Khan fight and seems to have lost all ability to take a punch. He could get seriously hurt and I feel that he has made a terrible decision.
I agree, even if he wins this comeback fight he has lost the ability to take a punch. The more punches he receives the worst his speech will become. He must need money badly. Either way its a bad decision, Especially at LightWelter. He wasnt exactly a Big Lightweight.
Problem is though..... could he ever be persuaded to call it a day? Promoters can join forces and refuse to put him on their shows.... and he is neither savvy enough (seemingly), nor a big enough draw to self promote. The worrying thing is that he could always go into unlicenced boxing and get his fix that way.
He's going to get knocked the **** out again and again until he finally quits or his license is revoked.
he was out gunned agaisnt castle and khan. but i think it's worse that he comesback 4 years later when he is completly done. get it out of his system so to speak. but he sounds pretty punchy...his style isnt long career wise
also khan, katsidis are world title challengers and pretty good at world level. castle we dont know yet but still...he was taken out by mugs.
The thing is he is actually Promoting the show, he has 3 Pro Boxers making their Pro Debuts who are under his wing. He has a his own gym as well and seems to be doing ok. I think he is addicted to the game like alot of fighters are, they never know how to pack it in until its too bloody late.
Does he not have friends, family that can tell him? Current/ex fighters maybe? I know the Hatton's are saying that it will be entirely his decision and he will not be influenced by them or by outsiders such as Joe Calzaghe, who has advised him to quit - but surely he will be looking to them for advice and guidance? Obviously the two scenarios are different, in that Hatton, whilst looking less than stellar in his previous fight.... it was with the P4P #1 who had destroyed and stopped Oscar De La Hoya previously - there could be a school of thought that Ricky could continue at 'world title' level rather than with the P4P'ers.... whilst Earl was a decent-ish EBU level fighter who received a savage beating in a world title fight, was blown away by Amir Khan (who isn't a noted puncher) and also lost in a round to Henry Castle...
Exactly. To be honest I think he does have good support who are advising him to quit, but he is one of those who just will not listen. I fear that he could end up in really bad shape. I obviously wish the guy the best in his fight but you can't help but thinking maybe it might be better he lost in a convincing manor, then we wont have the talk of 'I'm back', 'I ready to take on the world', 'bring on Hatton', etc etc. Then he will know its time to pack it in once and for all.
