He was awful. He quit boxing for two or three years to be a song and dance man, how he arrived at that decision is a mystery to me.
He wasnt even that good of a dancer. I dont know where you would find clips of him singing. Hopefully theyve all been destroyed.
From Sugar Ray Robinson: The Bright Lights and Dark Shadows of a Champion [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JXS78lAsIxE&feature=channel&list=UL[/ame] If you haven't seen this doc, I suggest you watch the whole thing. Anyway, go to 1:12 and you'll see what everyone's talking about
Yes there are clips of Ray Robinson singing AND dancing on early television...Ray, through as a great fighter , tried a singing and dancing routine, but his act left a lot to be desired...
SRR's phrasing is just like SRL's...or maybe that should be the other way around!!! Seriously, watching this clip and then hearing SRL in interviews, it sounds like SRL is TRYING to sound just like SRR!
Robinson was hardly through as a great fighter. He came back 3 years later, fought on for ten years, and won the middleweight championship three more times (all against Hall Of Famers I think).
Robinson was a pain to deal with in a business sense but atleast he had the sense of humour to poke a little fun at himself for it, and Archie... He also played a villain on "Mission Impossible": [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=66iuUWODvAQ[/ame]
Wouldn't go that far...he was a very good tap dancer, moved like a pro. In that dance duo clip with Gene Kelley, he looks the better of the two. Thanks for that, watching it now...
