i dont really know the amateur game that well and was wondering if you lot could help on schooling me who was the greats
Teofolio Stephenson-Three gold medals Felix Savon-Three gold medals. He sparked David Tua in spectacular fashion but lost to Chagaev when he was pretty much over the hill. Lazlo Papp-Three gold medals. Mark Breland-1 loss in 165 amatuer fights including a gold medal at the Olympics. Bernard Taylor-Had close to 400 amatuer fights if I recall correctly. Yury Gamboa and Guillermo Rigondeux both had outrageous amatuer records. Iran barkley was an excellent amatuer which often surprises people given his style. Howard Davis was insanely good as an amatuer and it's often forgotten that he was voted outstanding boxer at the 76 games ahead of Ray Leonard. With today's tit for tat, slaptastic amatuer scoring system Howard Davis would probably be the perfect amatuer fighter with his crazy speed and utter lack of power. Humberto Gonzalez was no Olympian but he was unbeaten in 40+ amatuer fights.
Robinson was a great amateur boxer as well. Didn't he only lose a fight or two out of around 90? Donald Curry was an extremely prolific one as well.
Bernard Taylor lost only 8 fights outta almost 500. Wasnt Nino Benevenuti undefeated as an Am? Maybe not Wayne Mc Cullagh hadnt a bad amateur record either.
Harry Mallin ...... I know nothing about him other than he won two Olympic Golds and supposedly never lost a fight! :bbb
Dick McTaggert, but he wasn't even picked for Scotland for his first Olympic Games, had to qualify through England.
Antonio Tarver is one of the very best we ever produced. Whitaker was phenomenal even in the amateurs.
