Great and not-so-great "classic" fights from the past

Inspired by the recent Moore-Durelle and Basilio-Saxton threads, some fight legends outgrow the actual documented footage, whereas others genuinely stand up to their reputation as classics.

With this in mind, what filmed fights from the 60s back stand up to their general reputation as being "great" fights and which "great" ones are somewhat underwhelming by modern standards?

I'll start off with the aforementioned examples:
-Moore-Durelle is every bit as good as its legendary status, unquestionably one of the greatest title fights in boxing history.
-Basilio-Saxton was called 1956's Fight Of The Year by The Ring. It was good, but not an out and out great fight imo.

 

Just to be clear, by modern standards I’m talking about the 1970s onwards, so not sure I agree with you about modern standards being underwhelming.

 

It's an arbitrary distinction, I know, but the thread is for fights from the early days of fight films (1900s/1910s) up to the end of the 1960s.

Not suggesting 1970s wasn't a classic period for boxing but I was referring to "classics" from the less recent past.

 

That should go without saying, obvs.

 

The Ring made a list of the 100 greatest title fights in history back in 1996 (not the March issue @mark ant) which serves as a pretty good reference point for the so-called "classic" fights from the past:

Most deserve to be on the list based on the quality of the fight but checking out the top 20, there are ones there that are probably on there for their historical significance rather than the in-ring action.

 

I nearly stopped at the end of the 50s. The point was to analyse older fights that have been passed down from generation to generation as great fights and assess whether they truly were, based on the available film. No question that the 70s had brilliant fights but we all know how brilliant they were. Probably should have established a clearer logic in my original thread post, but... there you go.
