Great article on Patterson ducking Nino Valdes https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=I3ZhAAAAIBAJ&sjid=4wAEAAAAIBAJ&pg=7026,6095940
Good article. Bobby Gleason was a very bellicose manager, and maybe that hurt him, I don't know. But whether or not you agree with his verbiage, you have to feel for them. I mean, Valdes deserved a shot at Marciano and he deserved a shot at Patterson, so it had to be galling to watch the Cockells, the Rademachers, the Jacksons, the Londons all getting title shots while you're there as the top contender watching them pass you by. Again, whether you agree with Gleason or not, you had to feel the injustice.
There seems to be a lot of Nino Valdes fans around on this site, but honestly I cannot se that ha would have had a chance against Floyd Pattersons fast hands. Or for that sake Rocky Marcianos strength. Valdes had his wins, but when he stepped up he generally lost.
And that’s the thing...everybody says Patterson is underrated, but when there is proof that you ducked people...
Do fighters really duck other figjters, or do managers do that for financial reasons? Managers seek to make the most profitable matches while minamizing risk as much as possible.
I didn't know Patterson but if he was like most fighters he was probably not afraid of any fighter. Managers are known for their "bravery," they'd put their boxers in with The Hulk if that fight paid the most. If a boxer seems to be "ducking" another fighter it's probably because the fighter is making more money fighting someone else or there is a chance of making more money if the fight is done later.
I agree. I would have picked both Marciano and Patterson over Nino if they had fought. But 'if' is the key word. It's probably me, the way I jump around yelling when I hear a bad decision. It just gets me when I see an injustice in the sport. And Valdes being bypassed for ordinary opposition was one of those things. Because whether he would have won or not is moot, when he didn't even get his deserved opportunity.
It is just an article of the historical times of that period. Look around more on the pages, and you see the New York Giants crushing Jim Brown and the Cleveland Browns in the NFL Eastern Division Title Game (next week is the famous Giants vs Baltimore Colt 1958 Game of the Century).
