Years ago I read "Ultimate Tough Guy; James J. Jeffries". It was one of the best boxing bios I ever read. Right there with Roberts' "Manassa Mauler", "Papa Jack", Chouinard's "Muscle and Mayhem The Saganaw Kid and the Fistic Word of the 1890s", Skehan's "Rocky MARCIANO: Biography of a First Son", Kram's "Ghost of Manilla", LaMotta's "Raging Bull", Max Schmeling autobiography, Moras "Stanley Ketchel", 2 great Tunney bios and of course the Langford classic by along with probably 54 other fighter bios read and bought throughout the years. I have "A Man Among Men" about Jeffries and this month finally bought and started "In The Ring With James J. JEFFRIES" by Pollack. It is awesome! I love it! One of the keys to my favorite bios are the description of fights. These put you right there and give you all the atmosphere and ambience of the moment. Waited a long time to buy this, but like Carney's classic, "Ultimate Tough Guy", it was well worth the wait. After I finish this, I will begin the just arrived "Abe Attell: The Life & Times" bio I have waited impatiently for. Good times for boxing historians like yourselves. Happy New Year indeed.
I forgot to put another of my favorites that I read in November was "Gomez" by Michael Armstrong "Gomez". I have his dvd career set and reading his autobiography was very good. Exciting fighter, good book.
