This is rapidly turning into an argument, about whether the credible candidates held some version of the title!

Wills, Burley, Marshall, Bivens, Langford because of the landscape/times/politics

Bernard Mays maybe could of been great if not for personal demons.

I feel like the 30s-40s could have some sleepers here since there were so many fighters fighting so often and some guys just never got the chance or weren't invested in properly. For every Jersey Joe Walcott that was found by a manager/backer, how many never were and couldn't invest full time to fighting/training

Len Harvey, Jock McAvoy, Bert Gilroy, Ernie Roderick, Eric Boon, Jim Brady, Jack Casey and so on, these are just a few of some overlooked British Greats.

As so often it depends on your definition of "great". With the possible exception of Briscoe and Medel I don't consider any of the others great.

but now the ACTUAL RATINGS & REPORTS are available to the Public at large,

where as until recently very few people had access to them. Showing his Career Facts and not just statements or claims about him, but Hundreds of Contemporary Fight Reports, Actual RATINGS and Commentaries.

None of which change his win -loss record. When he stepped up in class he got beat.
Name a single world rated fighter he beat?
Name a single month in any given year in which he was top ten ranked at any weight?

First off his Win/Loss Record is 88 Wins to 25 Losses, 13 of which took place in his first 4 Novice Years, starting out as a 15 year old Pro, a few of them he reversed.

Secondly, he goes 6 Years undefeated in 42 Contests and of the remaining 12 losses, 5 were against Heavyweights he shouldn't have 'had' to fight at all, and even 2 of them Questioned.

Third, "the ROBBERIES" - 6 of them, REPORTED and 2 of them his Opponents ALREADY Secured for the TITLE Fight, before he even met them.

    - No.1 Contender, still undefeated, 6 years, in 1942 yet Passed Over for 2 other Lower Contenders

    - No.1 Contender now for both MW & L-HW Title but Dropped Outright as a MW Title Contender in 1944, the excuse being Matchmakers never arranged the 'eliminator'. WHAT? ... No.1 and 4 Years Official Challenger and no one bothered to put this fight together, 'They' didn't approve it, allow it to happen more accurately!

Of course it makes ALL the Difference - That's what PUBLICALLY Available Reports do, they PROVE the claims & stated facts from all those years ago...

that is what the Documented Reports Do, they are the Validation, the Research and the FACTS!

they Exist Publicly Now, for All too See... unlike a couple of people who tried too suggest there was no such reports.

That' s the FACTS, and just like 'other' fighters it brings light & changes everything.

In his 3 rd year as a pro, with 8 fights under his belt he lost to Johnny Morgan 2-2-2. Then he lost to Jimmy Barr 13-9-3.In his 12 fight he lost to Bob Donaldson 4-1-0 by ko,then he lost to Brady 7-3-3 by tko, followed by losing to Johnny Clements 6-5-0inGilroy's14th fight.
With 21 fights behind him he lost to7-4-0 Jock Lees, then to13-12-2 Bob Lees

    So
1.Gilroy was not being overmatched in class .
2.He was not being over matched in experience.
    3. In his novice years, as you call them, he was being matched with fellow novices.
    4. He was not only losing ,in several cases he was being knocked out.
5.Nobody who had been a pro for 4 years is a novice.
    6. 30 of his opponents had losing records ,10 were debutees

NB his record is 88 wins 26 losses.
