I’m not sure about that, the WBSS paid well. Callum Smith made a fortune in the 168lbs one. Also remember that Bellew earn’t about 30% of what Haye did for fight one. Bellew crapped it, he would have been destroyed by any of those 8 in the tournament.
From 11 to 17 iirc. He can be annoying on occasion, but he's a terrific journalist when he puts his mind to, and he absolutely adores the game. I reread his book often (Bunce's Big Fat Short History of British Boxing).
Well this is the problem as we all know. Never in a million years should he have been considered an 'existing champion' when you would be pushed to say he beat anyone in the top 10 of the division. We saw what happened to Makabu when he fought his first world level opponent in an ancient super middleweight in Badou Jack.. still managed to get knocked out. Bellew had already tasted what it was like fighting one of the best in Adonis Stevenson. I can see why he didn't fancy it again at cruiser until his last cashout against Usyk. I guess part of you expects 'champions' to want to fight the best, even when it's a gobshite like him.
I've read it a couple of times, excellent book. He really is a knowledge in the sport. He writes very well, his articles in Boxing News are my favourite thing alongside anything Hirsch or Hauser writes. His novel is not bad either. Hauser and Hirsch both respond to emails btw - really humble and happy to chat which surprised me.
Are they really? Quality. I like Hauser, never afraid to say what he thinks, his article about AJ retiring was class, and difficult to disagree with.
yeah, I emaiiled Hauser as his email address is on his Boxing News articles, when he wrote a fantastic piece about a local boxer Dec Spelman. Kept in touch with him ever since. Has even emailed suggesting books and articles. Hirsch has a great sense of humour, really laid back. Randomly obsessed with donuts.
made me chuckle when Hearn criticised a Hauser article and viewpoints. It was the equivalent of a Hollyoaks actor criticising De Niro's performance.
Agree with you on Bunce regarding his book and his articles in Boxing News. Would be interested to hear your views on Elliot Worsel who seems to have somehow got himself the position of online editor of said magazine. I personally find his articles not very well written and somewhat boring but that should not surprise me as i did not like his David Haye book
Hahaha, brilliant. I'll look that up now, as mine came through the door earlier. Hope Spelman is doing ok now, after that medical issue
I find Worsel's articles....odd. He talks about himself a lot and tried to link himself to being a hero as his dad had been a fireman. His first book before the Haye one is worth missing too mate.
highlight of the week mine being delivered. I have to get it early as the cats drag it off and I have to hunt for it. Presume they're not fans. Spelman is doing very well in retirement, I watched his early fights and the one he had vs Carl Wild in person, and my ex father in law was one of his sponsors (Fender Steel). His retirement was one of those sensible ones, dodgy scan so knocked it on the head. He is now training my home town's (Gainsborough) BKB fighter Ricardo Franco. Franco is another of the good guys, was told his career was over when he had to have his colon removed, he refused and now fights with a colostomy bag. There are so many good people in this sport we love.
